In the wizarding world of Harry Potter, a half-blood is someone whose either parent is a muggle-born (non-magical) or a half-blood themselves. Often, pure-bloods looked down on the muggle or half-blood wizards and witches. This prejudice was a major reason for animosity and feud in the magical society.

However, one's bloodline or family history had nothing to do with their prowess as a successful sorcerer. It could not determine their expertise in the field of magical art. In fact, some of the most iconic characters in Harry Potter happen to be half-bloods, including Harry himself.

Severus Snape

Severus Snape was not just one of the most powerful wizards in the world of Harry Potter, but he also assumed the title of “The Half-Blood Prince,” as seen in the sixth part of the series. His father, Tobias Snape was a muggle, whereas his mother, Eileen Prince was a pure-blooded witch. Snape’s childhood at Hogwarts was pretty rough as he was bullied and treated like an outcast by other students like James Potter. He grew up to be one of Hogwarts' most intimidating and strict professors who deliberately isolated himself from the crowd. Throughout his life, Snape remained a seriously misunderstood character. His magical expertise is evident not just from his potion making skills but also from his courage to defy “He who must not be named” in order to protect Harry. Besides being a terrific sorcerer, Snape was an angel in disguise.

Albus Dumbledore

Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore was not just the most incomparable wizard among the other siblings in his family but also one of the greatest in the Harry Potter series. Dumbledore was half-blood owing to his muggle-born mother, Kendra Dumbledore. There was hardly any fight that Dumbledore lost, including his thoroughly calculated moves in the battle against Voldemort, which ultimately led to his own death. More than being a genius in the wizarding world, he stood as a pillar of support and protection to his students at Hogwarts, especially Harry. The way he fulfilled his duties as the upright Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry was simply matchless. It was his unyielding faith in the magic of love that made him such a legendary and unforgettable character.

Sybill Trelawney

Sybill Trelawney was adept at the art of foretelling the future, which is why she served as the Professor of Divination at Hogwarts. Born to a muggle mother and a father with magical roots, Sybill was a gifted half-blood witch who proudly inherited her clairvoyance powers from her great grandmother, the legendary Seer Cassandra Trelawney. Though most people misunderstood her eccentric and slightly unhinged nature, she delivered some of the most groundbreaking prophecies in the Harry Potter series. For example, Harry’s Grim omen came true when he temporarily died in Deathly Hallows Part 2, or the prediction of master and servant’s reunion proved accurate when Peter Pettigrew resurrected Voldemort in Goblet of Fire. She frequently offended others with her day-to-day predictions that seemed a bit over-the-top, like the time Umbridge almost expelled her because of the prophecy she made about her. Yet, Sybill's rare but insightful visions about the bigger picture made her an important figure in the wizarding world.

Dolores Umbridge

You will be shocked to learn that the vile muggle hater, Dolores Jane Umbridge was a half-blooded witch herself, born of Orford Umbridge, father with magical lineage, and muggle mother, Ellen Cracknell. In desperate attempts to make the world believe that she was a pure-blood, Dolores cut ties with her maternal side of the family and treated other non-pure-blood wizards and witches with utmost cruelty. She initially served a senior position at the British Ministry of Magic, but it was when she came to Hogwarts as the Defence Against Dark Arts Professor that we truly learned of her ambitious and oppressive nature. She was hated by the students for all her punitive ways of gaining control over them, like the time she made Harry use the cursed quill. Despite her villainy in the series, we cannot deny that Umbridge was one of the powerful sorcerers in the world of Harry Potter.

Garrick Ollivander

Garrick Ollivander was not just a specially gifted wizard but also a character of great importance in the Harry Potter series. He was known as the best wand maker in the wizarding society with his own little shop in Diagon Alley. The son of a pure-blood father and a muggle-born mother, Olivander’s mixed heritage deeply influenced his expertise in wandcraft. It was fascinating the way he spoke of his wands like they were people with feelings. He was so dedicated and passionate about his work, that he remembered every wand he ever sold. He once told Harry, “The wand chooses the wizard, Mr. Potter. It's not always clear why.” In fact, all his interactions with Harry in the movies have pointed toward something of a deeper significance. After all, a wand is what truly completes a wizard or witch and Ollivander being the master craftsman behind them, was a very powerful figure.

Remus Lupin

Remus Lupin was surely one of the most underrated yet resilient wizards across the Harry Potter universe. His mother, Hope Howell was a muggle, thus making Lupin a half-blood. When he joined Hogwarts as the Defence Against Dark Arts Professor in Prisoner of Azkaban, we got glimpses of his amiable and wholesome nature which made him a favorite among the students. Instead of trying to stick to the old-school, rigid methods of teaching, Remus made his lessons fun and interactive. Not to forget how he taught Harry something so complex as conjuring a Patronus charm with such ease. However, Lupin’s werewolf alter ego really set his life on a challenging path. He was also a part of the Order and valiantly sacrificed his life in the battle against the Dark Lord.

Nymphadora Tonks

Nymphadora Tonks was the daughter of the pure-blood witch, Andromeda Black and a muggle-born father, Edward Tonks. Although her screen time was very limited in the Harry Potter movies, we learnt that this half-blood witch was a Metamorphmagus, meaning someone who could transform from one physical appearance into another by choice. This gift helped her work as an Auror in the Ministry of magic. Tonks was a bold, beautiful, and vibrant character, who brought a spark everywhere she went. She fell in love with Remus and married him, despite his lycanthropic condition. She also gave birth to a son, and Harry was chosen to be his godfather. In the battle against Voldemort, Tonks fought with great courage, but was killed along with Remus.

Minerva McGonagall

Professor Minerva McGonagall did not just guide or teach the students at Hogwarts but she protected them with all her might, even in the face of supreme danger. She was one of the toughest half-blood sorcerers, coming from a family of a muggle father and a witch mother. She was strict but kind-hearted, and most importantly, fair with each and every pupil in her classroom. McGonagall was known for her formidable presence that forced the students to maintain order and decorum around her. When Hogwarts was under attack, during the battle against Voldemort, Professor McGonagall fought with fearless determination and gave her best to shield the school and the students.

Tom Riddle

Tom Marvolo Riddle, infamously known as Lord Voldemort, was half-blood in origin as he was born to his muggle father, Tom Riddle Senior and pure-blood witch mother, Merope Gaunt. He surely remained one of the most feared yet greatest Dark wizards of his time in the Harry Potter series. After discovering that he was a descendant of Salazar Slytherin from the maternal side of his blood, he became growingly intolerant of the muggle-borns. During his days as a student in Hogwarts, Tom even opened the Chamber of Secrets, unleashing the basilisk to target muggle students like Myrtle Warren (we know her as Moaning Myrtle). In fact, later he had deliberately adopted the name Voldemort because he wanted to rid himself of his muggle identity. His ambition to gain control over the world and cheat death, made him split his soul into seven Horcruxes, a dangerously evil act that only the greatest of greats could achieve.

Harry Potter

Being the titular character of the Harry Potter series, Harry was undoubtedly one of the most extraordinary half-blood wizards. The bespectacled hero was the only child of James Potter, a pure-blood wizard, and Lily Evans, a muggle-born witch, both of whom loved him unconditionally and willingly sacrificed their lives to protect his. It was after dodging Voldemort’s killing curse that he came to be referred to as “the boy who lived.” Harry Potter was not just a magnificent wizard, but also a gem at heart. His greatest strengths were not spells or curses, but love and friendship. One could say he was a foil to Voldemort. However, being “the Chosen One,” Harry ultimately succeeded in defeating Voldemort, but it could have been possible without the unparalleled support of all his beloved people.
