The beloved movie franchise of Harry Potter is based on J. K. Rowling’s novel series of the same name. It follows the story of the life of the chosen one, Harry Potter, who is prophesied to defeat the dark lord Voldemort.
From showing how he grew up and his years of learning magic in Hogwarts, the film series also depicted Harry’s friendships with the people around him. However, his life was always surrounded by challenges due to Voldemort, which caused many tragic deaths and heartbreaking moments in Harry’s and his loved ones’ lives.

10) Dobby’s death

In the seventh movie, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, Harry and his friends are captured by the Snatchers and taken to Bellatrix Lestrange in the Malfoy Manor.
Dobby comes to save Harry, and as they apparate from Malfoy Manor, Bellatrix throws her knife in their direction, which hits Dobby. As they appear on the beach of Shell Cottage, Harry is devastated to see his little friend dying. Harry desperately asks Hermione to help save Dobby but to no avail.
In a heartbreaking scene, Dobby dies in Harry’s arms while saying:
"Dobby is a happy elf to be with his friend Harry Potter."
9) Harry visits his parents’ grave

In their quest for Voldemort’s Horcruxes, Harry and Hermione visit Godric’s Hollow in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1.
While Hermione discovers Ignotus Peverell’s (one of the original owners of the Deathly Hallows) grave, Harry finds out about his parents’ grave. This is one of the most heartbreaking scenes, as Harry had never visited his parents’ graves before.
Later, Hermione conjures up a rose wreath with the help of her wand for the grave as they wish each other a Merry Christmas.
8) Cedric’s death

One of the most heartbreaking moments of the fourth film, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, is when Harry comes back with the Triwizard Cup and Cedric Diggory’s body.
One of the most heartwrenching scenes is when Cedric's father, Amos Diggory, comes screaming that it is his son's body as he realizes Cedric is already dead. Cedric was killed by Peter Pettigrew on Voldemort’s order.
Moreover, Cedric’s death changed the whole franchise moving forward, as it became darker with Voldemort’s arrival.
7) Professor Snape’s confession

As Severus Snape was about to die after being attacked by Nagini, he gave Harry his memories in the last movie, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.
As Harry poured the memories into the basin of Pensieve, he walked through Snape’s memories, where he encountered Snape’s early life and his love for Lily Potter from a young age.
He finds out why Snape was the one who killed Dumbledore and that he is the last Horcrux that Voldemort unintentionally created, which means that Harry has to die at the end of Voldemort. Snape then questions Dumbledore about raising Harry like a pig to be killed at the right time.
Dumbledore then asks him if he has started to care about the boy. That’s when he conjures up his Patronus charm, a silver doe, just like Lily. Dumbledore then asks:
"Lily! After all this time?"
To this, Snape replies:
"Always."
The scene showed how Snape had always loved Lily and tried to protect Harry for her till the end.
6) Hermione modified her parents’ memory

One of the most heartbreaking scenes from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 is Hermione’s attempt to make sure her parents are safe from the perils of the wizarding world.
Before joining Harry and Ron in the quest to find Voldemort’s Horcruxes, Hermione modifies her parents’ memory using an Obliviate charm. She changes their identity and erases their memory of her to keep them from the Death Eaters as the Second Wizarding War is about to begin.
5) Dumbledore drinking the potion of despair

In Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince, Dumbledore takes Harry to the Horcrux cave where Voldemort hid Salazar Slytherin’s locket, also a Horcrux.
However, to get access to the locket, one has to drink the Drink of Despair, also called the Emerald Drink. Dumbledore instructs Harry that even if he refuses to drink it, Harry has to force him to finish the drink.
The heartbreaking scene is when Dumbledore cannot drink further and begins to cry and beg Harry to stop him from making him drink, but Harry, although crying himself, is obligated to ask him to keep drinking.
4) Snape’s final words

After Harry reaches Professor Snape in the final movie, Snape has already been attacked by Nagini and is on the verge of dying.
After he gives Harry his memories, in this heartbreaking scene of his death, he asks Harry to look at him as he wants to see Lily’s blue eyes one last time before his death.
3) Sirius Black’s death

Sirius Black was one of the People in Harry’s life who was close to his parents and was also his godfather. Even after knowing each other for a short while, Harry grew closer to his godfather and considered him family. Therefore, his death impacted Harry a lot.
In the 5th movie, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry and his friends are attacked by the Death Eaters as they go to the Department of Mysteries to look for the prophecy.
Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and others come to save them. Later, while fighting with Bellatrix Lestrange, his cousin, Sirius, is sent through the Veil after being hit by the killing curse, Avada Kedavra. Harry’s screams, seeing his godfather perish through the Viel, is one of the most heartbreaking moments from the franchise.
2) Harry goes to Voldemort to sacrifice himself

After finding out about him being the last Horcrux through Snape’s memories, Harry goes to the forest to sacrifice himself in the last Harry Potter film.
Even after knowing this might be his end, he still willingly sacrifices himself to save everyone from Lord Voldemort, as he now knows that killing him will also make Voldemort more vulnerable, as all the Horcruxes will be destroyed.
1) Dumbledore’s death

Dumbledore’s death is one of the most devastating moments in the Potter franchise. Not only the death but the circumstances before and after his death are also heartbreaking to watch.
In the most heartbreaking turn of events, Draco Malfoy struggles to finish the Dark Lord’s task by killing his own headmaster. Snape then helps him by killing Dumbledore, which devastates Harry, who is observing everything while hidden.
Later, everyone in Hogwarts raised their wands to honor one of the finest headmasters of Hogwarts, making the scene an emotional farewell to Albus Dumbledore.
Dumbledore’s death also marked the onset of darker times in Hogwarts as well as the Wizarding World.
