Soap alum Richard Steinmetz (ex-Joe Scully Jr., General Hospital; ex-Martin Fitzgerald, Passions; ex-Jeff Hartman, Loving) begins taping at Days our Lives today in a role he describes as terrific.

Days of our Lives is bringing a familiar face to Salem. Multi-soap vet Richard Steinmetz (ex-Joe Scully Jr., General Hospital; ex-Martin Fitzgerald, Passions; ex-Jeff Hartman, Loving) has joined the cast of the NBC soap opera and begins taping today, May 26.

The Chicago native shared the "good news" of his casting on Facebook, writing, "It's a terrific role, not sure if I can say what it is yet, but I'll keep you posted. And when the episodes start airing."

Steinmetz got his start in daytime playing Jeff Hartman on ABC's Loving from 1989 to 1993. He went on to appear in several primetime shows such as Melrose Place, Silk Stockings, Platypus Man, and Clubhouse, before landing the role of Martin Fitzgerald on Passions in 2004. He stayed in the soap's fictional town of Harmony until 2007, later landing at General Hospital to play the short-term role of Joe Scully Jr. in 2012.

As there's no word yet on who Steinmetz will be playing at DAYS, it's too early to tell which characters he might be interacting with. However, Passions fans are hoping that the actor will share scenes with Galen Gering (Rafe Hernandez), who played Steinmetz' on-screen son Luis Lopez-Fitzgerald from 1999 to 2008.

What do you think about Richard Steinmetz joining DAYS? Who do you think the multi-soap vet will be playing when he arrives in Salem?
