Days of our Lives took home the top award in the Daytime Drama category at last night's Writers Guild Awards, which head writer Ron Carlivati enthuses was, "pretty incredible despite all odds" in the pandemic year.

Congratulations are pouring in for the writing team at Days of our Lives, which nabbed top honors in the Daytime Drama category at the 2021 Writers Guild Awards. This is the show's first WGA win since 2014 and its third overall (its first win was in 2000).

In a pre-taped virtual ceremony, DAYS head writer Ron Carlivati accepted the award on behalf of the NBC drama's writing team, which includes Lorraine Broderick, Joanna Cohen, Carolyn Culliton, Richard Culliton, Rick Draughon, Dave Kreizman, Rebecca McCarty, Ryan Quan, Dave Ryan, Katherine D. Schock, and Elizabeth Snyder.

"It's just been a very strange year, and it's been an amazing thing that we've been able to put this show on at all," Carlivati expressed in his acceptance speech. "The fact that we're back to writing six shows a week and taping like eight shows a week is just pretty incredible, despite all odds. So, I just want to thank my team and everybody that puts the show together on the air."

DAYS' winning episodes -- numbers 13770, 13771, and 13772, which aired January 22, 23, and 24, 2020 -- focused on the car accident that led to Adrienne Kiriakis' (Judi Evans) death and Sarah Horton (Linsey Godfrey) giving birth to Mackenzie in the wreckage, which spurred the long baby swap storyline that is still being mentioned on-air to this day.

As Soap Central previously reported, DAYS was competing with only ABC's General Hospital, which won the WGA trophy for five years in a row, from 2015 to 2019, before The Young and the Restless broke its winning streak in 2020. Both The Bold and the Beautiful and Y&R chose not to submit for 2021.

Several congratulatory tweets were made in recognition of DAYS following the soap's WGA win, including messages from the Writers Guild and actors such as Paul Telfer (Xander Kiriakis) and Eric Martsolf (Brady Black).
