Did Days of our Lives' Rafe get the break in the case he needs to set his sister free?

It's been more than six months since Days of our Lives' Stefan found Gabi kneeling over Li Shin's body with a bloody knife, claiming she did not stab him. Before Li died, he named Gabi as his murderer, and it was her word against his. So, E.J. put Gabi behind bars without even holding a trial because that seems to be the Salem way.

After that, it seemed like everyone forgot about poor Gabi wasting away in Statesville -- including her brother Rafe. He barely lifted a finger to free his sister, despite having the resources of the Salem PD right at his fingertips. It took Stefan, Ava, and Harris doing their own investigation about something separate to give Rafe the evidence he needed to get Gabi released. But, is Gil's fingerprint in Li's dried blood enough for E.J. to relent and reopen the case?

Rafe isn't sure, so he's about to take a trip back in time with Ava as he has her recount her own actions that night when Li was killed. After all, she lived in the same apartment. As Ava begins to recall that fateful evening, she realizes she was actually there. However, she blacked out from the trauma. Ava is now convinced that Li was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, so Gil killed him.

When Rafe hears what Ava has to say, he tries not to get too excited, but it's not easy. After all, this still isn't the exact proof they need, and he knows E.J. is going to make things difficult.

"He's trying to separate himself and be professional, so as to make sure he's crossing all his t's and dotting all his i's in that regard," Galen Gering told Soap Opera Digest. "So he's not really getting caught up in it. He's also trying to make sure that he's there for Ava if she were to go down some emotional rabbit hole. But, yeah, this is obviously incredibly emotional for Rafe. As a big brother and father figure, the guy feels like a failure for not being able to have gotten Gabi off in all this time and actually vindicated."

This has to mean that Gabi's release is imminent, right? After all, DAYS hinted toward a new actress arriving on the scene soon, sharing a photo of performers Cherie Jimenez and Al Calderon. Since they were standing in what appeared to be Rafe's kitchen, fans immediately assumed that Jimenez would play a recast Gabi after Camila Banus departed the soap last fall.

Gabi will have a lot to deal with once she is released, as life has a habit of going on without you while you're behind bars. She thinks she's had a devoted husband over the last six months. What she doesn't know is that Stefan had a one-night stand with Ava that can open up a whole new can of worms.

Do you hope this means Gabi return sto the scene sooner rather than later? Can Stefan and Gabi pick up where they left off? We want to hear from you -- so drop your comments in the Comments section below, tweet about it on Twitter, share it on Facebook, or chat about it on our Message Boards.
