When Kristian Alfonso returns to Days of our Lives this week as Hope Williams Brady, her beloved Bo Brady will still be in a coma — his state of being for nearly a year and a half. However, we now know Bo was never supposed to be in a coma to begin with.
The happily ever after that wasn't
When DAYS first announced that Peter Reckell and Kristian Alfonso were returning to the soap together with Bo Brady now alive, fans thought they would finally get the happily ever after story they'd been waiting for since 2015. That was the year Bo returned to Salem after being held prisoner by Stefano DiMera, but died in Hope's arms from a brain tumor within days.

In 2022, the spin-off mini-series Days of our Lives: Beyond Salem, Chapter 2, Bo and Hope met again in heaven, but neither character remained dead. Bo saw to it that Hope returned to Earth after being shot and soon we saw Bo wake up in a cryogenic chamber.
In 2023, we learned that Megan DiMera had kept Bo on ice for years, but she finally revived him and cured his tumor. She also brainwashed him into becoming one of her trusted minions who didn't remember his love for Hope. After Hope finally found Bo alive and well, he remembered everything they shared together and called her "Fancy Face" once again. Sadly, Shawn thought his father was going to hurt his mother and shot him the moment Bo and Hope shared their first embrace in eight years.
Bo ended up in a coma, which is the state he remains in today, but that's not the story Alfonso thought she'd play out when she agreed to return to the soap she'd called home since 1983.
Days of our Lives changed course
This Friday, Alfonso will be back again as Hope learns that her father, Doug, died in his sleep. During Alfonso's last DAYS stint, she told Soap Opera Digest that she wished she'd shared scenes with Bill Hayes, who played Doug for more than 50 years but passed away in January.
"I will never get over that I didn’t get the opportunity [to play that] because I would have had scenes with Bill and Susan together as a family," Alfonso said. "So that, I am very sad about. The whole story idea was great and I was looking forward to it. But anyway, things changed and were out of our control. But that would have been joyful and super-fun to shoot."
So, what was originally supposed to happen last year?
"When I was back last time, Hope did not make it back to Salem," Alfonso lamented. "She was still in a very faraway land, somewhere in Europe with fabulous clothes. The story that was going to be told was that Hope would return to Salem, Bo and Hope would return to Salem to reunite — even after the shooting, he would be fine, and all these good things were going to happen and we would reunite with our families."
With Alfonso and Reckell slated for another return in the spring of 2025, will their happily ever after finally arrive? Stay tuned to find out.
