It was out with a lot of the old the last few weeks in Salem, but now it's time for the new as Ron Carlivati's final stories wrap up and new head writer Paula Cwikly's stories begin on Thursday, April 24, as does the long-anticipated Salem carnival.

The festivities finally begin in Horton Town Square as Salemites raise funds to keep Salem University Hospital's doors open. Xander (Paul Telger) is shirtless and ready for the dunking booth while Cat (AnnaLynne McCord) and Chad (Billy Flynn) discuss their raging success. They set out to do this right, and everyone looks like they're having a fantastic time.

At the bachelor auction at The Brady Pub, Gabi (Cherie Jimenez) decides to get back at JJ (Casey Moss) by bidding on Alex (Robert Scott Wilson). Stephanie (Abigail Klein) doesn't like anyone trying to outbid her for her boyfriend, but Gabi is determined to show JJ she is forgetting about him and having a good time.

EJ wakes for his mom

While Kristen (Stacy Haiduk) spends time with her daughter at the carnival, her doppelganger, Susan, sneaks back into town to visit her darling baby boy, who is still in a coma.

Susan is the one person who can get through to EJ (Daniel Feuerriegel). When he hears his mother's voice, he awakens from his coma, much to Susan's delight. She knew her Elvis would wake for her. However, he may now have even more trouble from his son.

Johnny and Chanel's dreams come true

Paulina (Jackee Harry) must finally say the right thing to Amy Choi (Shi Ne Nielson) because she agrees to let Johnny (Carson Boatman) and Chanel (Raven Bowens) adopt Sophia's (Rachel Boyd) baby. Tate (Leo Howard) and Sophia are in shock, but Chanel is overjoyed and can't wait to share the news with Johnny.

Johnny seems as stunned as Tate and Sophia when Chanel announces they are going to be parents. This is what he wanted, but now it looks like he is not so sure. Is what happened between his own parents weighing too much on Johnny's mind?

The end of Rafe and Jada

Sadly, Jada (Elia Cantu) feels that she has to break things off with Rafe (Galen Gering). They have broken the other's trust one too many times, and she is not sure they can get it back. Will Rafe fight her on this, or is it really over for good?
