Days of our Lives spoilers, January 9: It's Holly to the rescue when Doug's in danger

Doug (Peyton Meyer) thought he could smooth-talk his way out of a problem, but the two goons he owed money to refused to wait for the rest. When they saw Doug didn't have the cash, they told him his time was up, and they beat him up.

Holly (Ashley Puzemis) finds Doug in the park and quickly takes him home to the Kiriakis mansion so he can be safe. Dr. Sarah (Linsey Godfrey) looks him over and declares that Doug is a bit roughed up but will be fine. This leads to some bonding time between Holly and Doug, just as Tate (Leo Howard) and Sophia (Madelyn Kientz) share words.

When Tate runs into Sophia in Horton Town Square, he takes her to task for telling Holly that Sophia is still pregnant before he'd had a chance to do it. Sophia plays innocent and claims she thought Holly already knew. Is she telling the truth? If not, will Tate begin to see that Sophia is not everything she seems on the surface?

Tate has no idea that Holly is this close to finding his replacement. Doug and Holly seem to get along better than Holly and Tate ever have.

Showdown at the DiMera mansion

The DiMera mansion is never without its fair share of drama. The New Year's Eve party resulted in a cheating scandal being revealed while Rafe (Galen Gering) remained holed up in the tunnels. Now, Kristen (Stacy Haiduk) tells Brady (Eric Martsolf) that it's Rachel (Finley Rose Slater) who has been sending those threatening texts to Ava (Tamara Braun).

Brady doesn't want to believe that's true, but it makes sense. Kristen seemed sincere when she claimed it wasn't her. Brady believed her but didn't expect Rachel to be the culprit. Brady also blames all of this on Kristen. After all, she is Rachel's primary caregiver and influence. All Rachel had to do was watch her mom to think this kind of behavior was okay.

Kristen defends her daughter and tells Brady that she only did it so they would reunite. Rachel wants her parents together and thinks Ava is her only obstacle. Will Brady and Kristen talk to Rachel to try to solve this problem?
