At the DiMera mansion, JJ and Shawn showed Kristen a warrant to search the residence and her belongings. Kristen protested when JJ took her bag, but grew silent when he pulled out a gun. He asked Kristen if she wanted to explain. “It’s not what it looks like,” Kristen responded. The officers invited Kristen to answer their questions down at the station.
When Kristen balked and said she had to get to work, Shawn threatened to arrest her. Kristen begrudgingly acquiesced and left with Shawn. JJ headed upstairs to search the family rooms, but not before taking a lingering glance at the crime scene and thinking back to Gabi holding a gun on EJ in the room.
Later, at the police station, Shawn led Kristen into the interrogation room. They were soon joined by JJ. Kristen snarked that “Boy Wonder” hadn’t found anything at the mansion. JJ confirmed he hadn’t, so he wanted to focus on the gun in Kristen’s possession. Kristen belligerently refused to reply when directly asked if she had used the gun on EJ. Shawn and JJ teamed up to lay out Kristen’s motive for wanting revenge on EJ: the men believed EJ had played a major role in Kristen’s mother’s sudden disappearance.
Shawn needled Kristen on how “unlucky” it had been for Kristen to find her mother only to lose the woman again so promptly. JJ asked again if Kristen had blamed EJ and taken action. Kristen turned the tables and chastised Shawn and JJ as “two clowns” who were incompetent at their jobs.
Even if Kristen was guilty, she would never directly confess to them. Kristen then asked Shawn if he could be the shooter, since his ex-wife had been sleeping with the victim. Kristen grinned victoriously at the cops’ lack of response and demanded a lawyer.
At DiMera Enterprises, Gabi mulled over the Spectator article about EJ. Melinda entered the office, and the woman discussed the shooting and its negative impact on DiMera stock prices. Melinda wondered who did the deed, and Gabi retorted that their boss believed Gabi to be the culprit. She updated Melinda on her tense conversation with Kristen and Kristen’s subsequent accusation. Gabi had gotten the last word, though, by turning the accusation back on Kristen.
Gabi considered Kristen a much more likely suspect since she actually lived with EJ. Melinda darkly joked about Kristen possibly committing “fratricide before her bathtub filled.” The banter was interrupted by a call for Melinda…from Kristen. She wanted Melinda down at the police station immediately. When Melinda hung up, she informed Gabi that Kristen was being questioned for the shooting; Gabi seemed taken aback.
At the hospital, Philip approached Kayla and claimed he’d had a doctor’s appointment. He quickly pivoted the conversation and tried to extract information about EJ’s condition from Kayla. The irritated doctor reminded Philip about patient confidentiality, but Philip argued that EJ’s public standing as a major stakeholder in DiMere Enterprises entitled the public to information about his condition. He made the case that a public disclosure had already been made about EJ’s comatose state. Kayla was curious as to why Philip held such an interest in EJ’s prognosis.
Philip chalked up his curiosity to simple interest since EJ was a prominent member of the community. Kayla wasn’t buying it and revealed Stephanie had told her she’d ended things with Philip because of his “underhanded business dealings.” Kayla pondered if Philip’s information-seeking session had more to do with Titan’s status as a rival of DiMere Enterprises. Philip claimed innocence and played the wounded hero card by emphasizing his doctor's appointment was about the leg he’d “lost in combat.” Kayla sarcastically commended Philip on his conscientiousness and bid him goodbye.
At the Kiriakis mansion, Xander invited Wei Shin inside. Xander apologized for the secrecy of the meeting and explained that it was the perfect time to take DiMera Enterprises. He then showed Mr. Shin the newspaper article about EJ’s shooting. Shin fretted about the shooting’s effect on DiMera’s already-plummeting stocks. Xander talked up the dire nature of EJ’s condition and informed Shin that from what Sarah had told him, EJ might not recover.
Xander assured Shin that Philip had gone to the hospital to get an update. He tried to persuade Shin that as chairman of the board, Shin had an obligation to act in DiMera shareholders’ best interests. Xander pitched Shin on the idea of using EJ’s vote by proxy to oust Kristen with a “no confidence” vote. The maneuver would free Shin up to strike a deal with Titan without the need for a “hostile” takeover. Shin was intrigued by the proposal but noted one significant “fly in the ointment”: Kristen.
Shin told Xander that even if they had EJ’s vote, Kristen had friends on the board and would still likely maintain majority control. Just then, Philip arrived with news that could change the narrative: Kristen had been brought in for questioning in EJ’s shooting. As Shin confirmed the news, Xander remarked that the latest development was “great news” for them. Shin proclaimed they needed to make their move at once.
Shin said that since Kristen was incapacitated, he could take over her vote, too. Then, he could persuade the rest of the board members to install him as CEO. But they had to act before Kristen was released or before EJ recovered. Shin urged Philip and Xander to get on the phone with all involved parties. The brothers shared a satisfied smile as they gladly obliged.
Meanwhile, back at the police station, Melinda arrived and met with Shawn and JJ outside the interrogation room. She blasted them for holding Kristen even though they had not yet identified Kristen’s gun as the murder weapon. After Melinda went inside the interrogation room, the cops admitted that they needed to match the bullet taken from EJ to Kristen’s gun. JJ realized with frustration that the bullet had not yet been catalogued as evidence.
Shawn paid a visit to forensics but returned with the news that the department wasn’t in possession of the bullet. Shawn wasn’t sure if the bullet had even been confiscated from the hospital. Soon thereafter, the duo made their way to the hospital and met with Kayla. She presented them with the bullet taken from EJ.
Back in the station's interrogation room, Kristen railed against the catastrophe that was probably unfolding at DiMera Enterprises because of her arrest. Melinda reminded her they had bigger problems, namely the gun. After taking a swipe at “Detective Dumb and Dumber” and their vendetta, Kristen confided how she had acquired the gun from her mother. Melinda had one obvious question: had Kristen used the gun to shoot her brother?
Melinda backed off and said she didn’t want to know. If she knew Kristen to be guilty, then Melinda couldn’t argue her client’s innocence. “You’ll never know otherwise,” Kristen pledged.

Back at DiMera Enterprises, Gabi called Javi and told him to cancel a business meeting since Kristen had become a suspect in EJ’s shooting. She snapped at Javi when he apparently asked if Kristen had done it. After she ended the call, Gabi flashed back to watching EJ from outside the mansion window on the night of the shooting. She remembered turning the door knob, with a gun in hand.
Just then, Xander and Philip casually strolled into Gabi’s office. When she demanded they tell her why they were in her office, Philip responded with a smirk, “I think she means our office.” As Gabi looked stunned and puzzled, the brothers announced, “All of this belongs to us now.”
In EJ’s hospital room, Belle sat beside a comatose EJ, took his hand, and kissed it. She expressed her disbelief at the news of his shooting. Suddenly, EJ lifted his head and sneered, “As if you care.” Belle was elated and tried to get up, but EJ stopped her and said he was only awake “in your imagination.” He made a joke about his comatose condition and then challenged Belle again on her worried state. Belle fiercely defended that she would care if anyone was hurt in such a way.
EJ cocked a brow and pressed, “Even me?” He reminded Belle of her attempt to entrap him and send him to prison. “Could it be that you’re here because you do love me after all?” he mused. Belle scoffed, but EJ countered that even though her betrayal had hurt him possibly more than a “bullet to the chest,” he had observed her reactions afterwards. She had been visibly rattled when he’d told her to admit he was in her heart and soul.
“To allow someone into your soul…to let them dwell in the deepest part of you – what is that if not love?” EJ asked. Since EJ may have sacrificed his life to hear her say the words, he pleaded with Belle not to keep him waiting any longer. Belle broke down and admitted, “Damn it, EJ, yes, I love you!” Satisfied, EJ settled back on his pillow and asked, “Was that so hard?” At that moment, Kayla entered the room and inquired what Belle was doing there.
Belle’s vision of a conscious EJ ended, and she tried to stumble out an explanation to Kayla. Belle was not present in her capacity as DA, as Kayla had assumed, but she had just wanted to check on EJ. Kayla would allow Belle to remain since EJ hadn’t had many visitors. She told Belle that EJ’s condition hadn’t changed, and Belle noted how still EJ looked in the bed. Kayla hoped the police would apprehend whoever shot him.
Kayla took the opportunity to check in with Belle about John. Belle reassured Kayla she was handling the circumstances with her dad as best she could. Kayla firmly believed Steve would find answers for the family. Kayla got a text, said she needed to leave, and gave Belle permission to stay longer with EJ.
When Kayla departed, Belle returned to her bedside vigil. She stroked EJ’s face and affirmed, “God help me, EJ, I do love you.” From the doorway, Sami emerged. She got Belle's attention and approached her surprised sister with a big smile. “Isn’t that sweet?” Sami asked, her smile dissolving into a scowl.
