Days of our Lives' Deidre Hall reveals Marlena's frustration with Shane as she desperately searches for John

Marlena (Deidre Hall) has been extremely frustrated lately on Days of Our Lives and with good reason. Not only has John (the late Drake Hogestyn) gone so deep undercover for the ISA that he hasn’t contacted her, but the agency itself — including his handler — has lost touch with the hero, as well.

The ISA’s director, Shane Donovan (Charles Shaughnessy), has been avoiding Marlena’s calls, so she and Steve (Stephen Nichols) decided to go and speak to him in person in the hopes of getting some answers regarding John’s whereabouts. Hall recently discussed Marlena’s frustration at continually being stonewalled.

Speaking with Soap Opera Digest, Hall explained that when Marlena and Steve confronted Shane demanding answers, they didn’t get anything except that John’s last known location was Estonia. She relayed her character’s devastation at not getting any solid leads. She explained that Marlena was “more frightened than she was when she got there.”

What made Shane’s lack of answers worse was his less-than-helpful demeanor. “There’s no expression of hope,” she said. “There’s no encouragement of, ‘It’s all going to be fine. Don’t you worry.’ She doesn’t receive any words of comfort.”

Despite the lack of anything helpful, Hall explained that Marlena was not going to stop. Ever. If the roles were reversed and Marlena was missing, John would move Heaven and Earth to find her. That being said, Hall stated, “That’s who she needs to be in this relationship now,” she said. "She will not be stopped. She will find him."

Something doesn’t add up

Hall further explained that Marlena’s determination exemplifies the fact that John and Marlena are always there for each other. “That they are a team, that they don’t give up on each other, that they fight together...and she will do that for him.”

But Shane’s lack of answers indicates that something more is amiss. John’s been on ISA missions for decades and he’s never just up and disappeared before. The fact that Shane’s not being completely forthcoming indicates that whatever’s going on is bigger than a simple agent and his family.

So Marlena better tread carefully in her search for John before she finds herself in a situation that she can’t get out of.
