Days of our Lives comings and goings: Thaao Penghlis is on his way back to Salem

Fan favorite Thaao Penghlis is coming back to Days of our Lives. The actor made his debut on the Peacock series back in 1981. Over the years, he's come and gone from Salem as both Tony DiMera and his doppelganger, Andre DiMera.

A Days of our Lives DiMera return

The Daytime Emmy-nominated actor took to social media to announce his return, which is set to occur in June. "Two of our best, Lauren Koslow [Kate] & Deidre Hall [Marlena]," Penghlis shared on Instagram along with a photo of both of his past and future co-stars.

Tony DiMera is coming home

Penghlis first exited DAYS back in 1985 when Tony disappeared into the fog. He returned in 1993 when then-head writer James E. Reilly rejuvenated the DiMera clan. Tony battled John Black (the late, great Drake Hogestyn) for the affections of John's then-love interest Kristen DiMera (then Eileen Davidson; now Stacy Haiduk).

Tony popped up again about a decade later and was seemingly killed off only this time, it wasn't Tony but rather Andre (who had presumably drowned in quicksand back in 1984). Andre was behind the whole Salem Serial Killer story that had many believing that beloved Marlena was a murderer. Not only was she innocent but the killer's victims all turned out to be alive. It was all a DiMera hoax!

In 2007, Tony was back on the canvas, and this time he reunited with his true love, Anna Fredericks Brady DiMera (Leann Hunley). Tony was then presumed dead again, prompting Anna to walk around with an urn containing his ashes. Good news! Tony wasn't dead this time either!

Penghlis is also known for his run as a member of another soap opera power family — the Cassadines on General Hospital. He made his debut on the ABC soap opera as Victor Cassadine, a member of a powerful Greek family intent on world domination. While some of the Cassadines met their final fate on Cassadine Island, Victor survived and went off to prison.

An astonishing 33 years later in 2014, Penghlis reprised his role as Victor and became embroiled in the current battle between good and bad guys in Port Charles. The next time we saw Victor in 2021, he was being played by Charles Shaughnessy, who played Shane Donovan on DAYS.
