It's not unusual for soap characters to languish on the backburner for a while, but Days of our Lives now has several players who have been there for too long and desperately need something substantial to do. Here are five Salem favorites who need a storyline ASAP.
Dr. Kayla Brady Johnson
The last time Kayla (Mary Beth Evans) had her own storyline, she was dead — or at least being kept on ice by Megan DiMera (Miranda Wilson) in Caracas. Ever since Kayla, Kate (Lauren Koslow), and Marlena (Deidre Hall) were resurrected and returned to Salem, all Kayla has done is be a doctor to all and listen to her daughter's love life woes.

While Stephanie (Abigail Klein) certainly has her share of drama to share with her mother, Kayla can't keep living vicariously through her. She needs a story of her own. After all, Kayla is one of Salem's most beloved heroines.
Kate Roberts Brady
Kate is in the same position as Kayla. Her last substantial storyline is when she was presumed dead. Sure, Kate's troubles lasted slightly longer when she ended up being held hostage on a fishing boat, but since then, she hasn't done much.
Yes, we know she is one of the producers of Body and Soul, but we don't consider that much. She mainly just stands around advising Abe (James Reynolds) or not saying much at all. The ill-conceived soap within a soap plot is going to come to an end soon, so hopefully, Kate can have her own story where she is in danger — and we are not talking about cleaning up her son Philip's (John-Paul Lavoisier) messes.
Roman Brady
Roman (Josh Taylor) is the perpetual man without a story. In fact, we don't even remember the last time he was in a front-burner plot. We know he mourned Kate when she allegedly died, but he was peripheral even to that storyline and mainly stood around behind the bar at The Brady Pub talking to Kate's urn. The only highlight of that story was when the urn talked back.
If Kate gets something to do, could it involve Roman, please? After all, he is her husband.
Shawn-Douglas Brady
While it's nice to have Shawn (Brandon Beemer) back in Salem wearing his police badge, he doesn't really have all that much to do. Before his last exit, Shawn had a casual hookup with Jada's (Elia Cantu) sister, Talia (Aketra Sevillian). Even a possible hookup with Chanel (Raven Bowens) wouldn't be a real storyline for Shawn since we know that Johnny (Brandon Beemer) is ultimately her endgame.
If Belle (Martha Madison) gets to rekindle whatever she had with EJ (Daniel Feurriegel) in time for Sami's (Alison Sweeney) imminent return, then Shawn should also get a chance to find someone new that isn't just a plot device for someone else's story.
Paulina Price
Last year, Paulina (Jackee Harry) was on the front burner as she battled cancer — and exposed her pregnant daughter to radiation during an ill-conceived rescue attempt in the snow. As soon as Paulina recovered, she went right back to being the busybody mayor who occasionally abuses her power and frequently gives advice to Chanel and Abe.
Why can't Paulina have her own storyline again rather than just supporting her loved ones and lording over Salem and its residents with an iron fist?
