When Sophia met with Melinda to ask for her legal help with adoption, Amy intervened. Melinda appealed to Amy by telling her about her personal history as a pregnant teen who had given up her daughter for adoption. Melinda warned Amy that if she stood against Sophia’s legal right to give up her child, Amy could lose both her grandchild and her child. Amy agreed to discuss the matter with Sophia later. Tate was livid to learn that Sophia had asked Melinda to represent them in the adoption.

A furious Maggie yelled at Xander for what he had done to Philip. Maggie admitted that she had advised Sarah to keep Philip’s secret from Xander, and she argued that Sarah’s instincts had been correct. Maggie ordered Xander to leave the house. Although Xander obliged, he took Victor’s portrait with him. Emotional, Xander sliced up the painting and left it in an alley.

Steve told Belle what had happened. Steve and Kayla confirmed that John’s sacrifice might have saved many lives, including Bo’s. Kayla confided to Steve that she was struggling with having three siblings fighting for their lives, including John. Steve confessed that he felt guilty that he had looped John into the Versavix operation. Kayla reminded Steve that John would not have regretted his actions. Stever prayed for John.

John clung to life in Salem Hospital while his family prayed for him. Belle told Marlena that John had given her power of attorney and that his wish had been to fight to the end. Xander attempted to get an update on the Versavix, and Belle lit into him. Belle blamed Xander for Philip’s condition, and she argued that Xander only cared about the drug because it would make him more money.

When Xander visited Philip, Sarah informed him that because of his actions, Philip had not been there to secure the Versavix. Sarah blamed Xander for John’s condition. Xander countered that Sarah’s lies had prevented him from ousting Philip from the company sooner, and that she was equally to blame for John’s condition. After their confrontation, Sarah refused to take Xander’s calls. Xander hired Melinda to represent him in his custody case for Victoria.

Paul and Brady talked about their love for their father and how lucky they were. Paul told Brady about John’s wish for Paul to get married in Salem instead of eloping. Brady agreed that a wedding was something to look forward to once John recovered.

Carrie arrived in Salem to support her mother as John recovered. Carrie reminisced about her childhood memories with John. John squeezed Carrie’s hand. Abe talked to John about how he had watched John and Marlena fall in love. Will, Paul, and Eric arrived in Salem, and they each had a moment alone with John. John spoke aloud to Paul, Belle, and Marlena. The doctors confirmed that John was defying the odds, and his vitals looked good.

Doug III and Ari agreed to meet up again. Doug asked Leo for help in locating Julie’s necklace, and Leo agreed. Ari lied to Gabi about where she had been when she had stayed out all night with Doug. JJ broke the news to Gabi and Ari about John, and Gabi took Ari to see John in the hospital. Gabi apologized to Javi for her overreaction, but Javi noted that he could not continue to work for her. Javi decided to apply to the Salem Fire Department.

Johnny and Tate visited John at the hospital. Chanel reminded them both that John was the strongest person they knew. John talked to Roman, and he asked about the lockbox. When Roman mentioned the gun might have been used in EJ’s shooting, Johnny stressed that he had not been the shooter. Johnny chafed at Belle’s suggestion to make up with EJ.

When EJ fell in the square, Johnny started to reach out to his father, but he stopped and walked away. EJ told Chad that he deserved Johnny’s contempt. Chad asked EJ whether he had stolen the Versavix, but EJ denied the accusation.

Belle questioned Alex about the Versavix theft and about Philip’s attack. Alex refused to answer whether he thought Xander was to blame for Philip’s condition. Belle pushed Alex to open up, and Alex admitted he had seen Xander leaving the Salem Inn around the time of Philip’s beating.

Kristen was upset to learn about John’s precarious health. EJ said he was concerned for Johnny and Belle’s emotional well-being. Rachel continued to feel ill. When Kristen asked about Rachel’s nightmare, Rachel admitted that she had seen Johnny argue with EJ and point a gun at him in real life, not a dream. Rachel said she had not seen the shooting or heard gunfire. Kristen advised Rachel to keep what she saw a secret. Kristen took Rachel to the hospital because Rachel still felt ill. Sarah helped Rachel feel better. Kristen told Brady the secret. Brady urged Kristen to tell the police about Johnny, but she refused.

Brady asked Kayla about Bo, and she said his infection had receded. Kayla said she was hopeful that Bo would survive. EJ moved forward with Dr. Jeffrey Russell to make plans for the sepsis drug.

Maggie told Julie that Sarah believed Xander had beaten Philip and that Sarah’s marriage was over. Maggie agreed that if Xander had been the culprit, she did not want Xander near Sarah or Victoria. Maggie and Julie were unsure how to vote. Kayla said she had a plan to take an anonymous vote to prevent bullying. The board voted on the proposals, and the vote was tied. Brady was the deciding vote, he was unsure whether to side with Xander or EJ.

Jada questioned Belle about Shawn’s whereabouts. Belle admitted that Shawn had delivered a drug to Bo, and Jada agreed that she did not need to hear the details since they might be incriminating. The discussion turned to the shooting, and Jada and Belle agreed that Ava was likely not EJ’s shooter. After Belle updated Jada on the evidence against Xander in Philip’s beating, Jada arrested Xander at the hospital before Brady could cast the deciding vote on the hospital proposals. Brady voted for EJ, giving him control of the hospital.

Kristen told EJ that Rachel had seen Johnny point a gun at EJ on the night of the shooting. In an effort to protect Johnny, EJ agreed to buy Rachel’s silence by returning Rachel Blake to Kristen. Kristen promised that her mother would never set foot in Salem as a condition of her return.
