In the Horton living room, Julie stared at a photo of Doug. Julie whispered, “Happy Valentine’s Day, darling.” Doug III walked in with a bouquet of red roses, and he wished Julie “Happy Valentine’s Day.” Julie thanked Doug.

“Red roses were your grandfather’s favorite flower. And I was just remembering a very wonderful Valentine’s Day that we spent together,” Julie said. Julie told Doug III about the time that Doug had cooked noodles at his nightclub when they had been short-staffed. Julie explained that Doug had had a gift for making people smile.

“I didn’t know you guys owned a club,” Doug III said. Julie told Doug that the club was where his grandfather Robert had sung. “Do you guys still own it?” Doug asked. Julie said no. “Maybe you can open a new club in his honor,” Doug suggested. “What a lovely idea. No, sweetheart. It will never be the same, not without my darling Doug,” Julie said.

Doug told Julie he could not imagine how difficult the holiday was for her. Julie admitted that she was in grief therapy with Marlena. “I really hope it helps,” Doug said. “Grief is the price you pay for love. I understand that you never get over the grief, but you get better at handling it. And I’m just not there yet,” Julie said. Doug told Julie that he was always willing to listen to her if she needed to talk. Julie asked Doug if he had purchased roses for anyone else.

“Just you,” Doug said. “Haven’t met [anyone]?” Julie asked. Doug admitted that he had not had any luck in love Julie was surprised. “If I’m being honest, there is one girl that I’m sort of interested in, but she’s with someone else,” Doug said. Doug noted that he wanted to respect the boundaries.

“I think it’s good to be honest about your feelings,” Julie advised. Julie told Doug that she had been married to another man when she had first met Doug. “Grandpa stole you away?” Doug said with a chuckle. “Actually, he was paid to break up my marriage,” Julie said. Julie noted that she had not been in love with her first husband. “In a very short time, Doug’s passionate feelings for me were quite genuine. And I responded big time,” Julie said. Julie told Doug III that Doug had written a song for her, and he had included it in a book of poetry for a Valentine’s Day present.

“I would love to see those lyrics he wrote,” Doug said. Delighted, Julie rushed off to find the book of poetry, but she came back empty-handed. “Do you remember the last time that you had it?” Doug asked. After a moment, Julie remembered that she had taken it to the cabin when she had been snowed in with Johnny and Chanel. Doug offered to retrieve the book, but Julie insisted that it was too big a hassle. “I’d be happy to. You’ve done so much for me, and I definitely owe you one,” Doug said.

At the Kiriakis mansion, Tate delivered a bouquet of flowers and chocolates to Holly. “Happy Valentine’s Day!” Tate said. “You did not have to do all this,” Holly said. Tate reminded Holly it was their first Valentine’s Day together, and he had wanted to make it one to remember. Tate cautioned Holly not to expect too much from the dinner he would be cooking at the cabin.

“Now I feel bad. I didn’t get you anything,” Holly lamented. “Don’t. I’m just really excited to get to spend some time with you tonight,” Tate said. Tate told Holly that they could stick to board games if she had changed her mind about sleeping together, but she was adamant that she had not. “I can’t wait to be with you tonight,” Holly said. Holly kissed Tate.

“I can’t wait to be with you. I just want to make sure that you don’t feel pressure. You know, I know this is a big deal for you,” Tate said. Holly frowned. “But it’s not a big deal for you?” Holly asked. Tate stressed that is not what he meant, and Holly apologized. “What I really meant is I just wish things had been different, is all,” Holly said. Tate agreed. Tate promised that their night would be perfect because he would be with Holly. “This is going to be a Valentine’s Day to remember,” Tate said.

After Tate left, Holly picked through her chocolates. “It looks like somebody’s Valentine’s Day is off to a nice start,” Maggie said. Holly offered a chocolate to Maggie, and she thanked Maggie for the use of the cabin. “[Tate] seemed pretty nervous asking for permission. Sounds like he’s got quite a romantic dinner planned,” Maggie said. Maggie asked Holly if she planned to have sex with Tate. Holly nearly choked on her chocolate.

“I know the last person you want to talk about sex with is your grandmother, but your mom is in Paris. And I believe this job falls on me. I just want you to know that I’m here for you,” Maggie said. “I do know that,” Holly said. Maggie told Holly that she respected her decisions but that she wanted Holly to know that she could be honest with her. Holly thanked Maggie.

“And to answer your question, Tate and I, we are planning on being together tonight,” Holly confessed. Maggie advised Holly to be prepared. Holly explained that she was on birth control. “Being prepared, it also means emotionally,” Maggie said. Maggie reminded Holly that she had been insecure about Tate’s sexual relationship with Sophia. “Honestly, it’s not about that. Grandma, I love Tate. And I know he loves me, so this just feels like the right time for us,” Holly said. With a nod, Maggie told Holly that she loved her.

In the town square, Sophia sat with her mom at the cafe. Amy presented a gift bag and wished her daughter a Happy Valentine’s Day. Inside was a baby blanket. “I know it’s not really a Valentine’s gift, but I couldn’t wait six more months to give it to you,” Amy said. Sophia confessed that she and Tate had been looking for parents to adopt their baby.

“We talked about this. I will never approve of my grandchild being given away to strangers,” Amy said. “But what if they weren’t strangers? What if you got to meet them and get to know them,” Sophia said. Sophia admitted that she had been talking to a couple that Amy knew from church. “You like them, don’t you?” Sophia asked. “Sure, I like them. They’re both successful Korean doctors and dedicated members of our church. They said they’re interested in adopting?” Amy asked. Sophia said yes but added that they had changed their mind. Sophia promised to find another couple like that.

“A perfect couple that is going to give this baby the best life possible,” Sophia said. “Don’t you think that the best life possible would be with his or her biological parents?” Amy countered. Sophia said no. “Would you still love me if I wasn’t biologically yours?” Sophia asked. “Of course,” Amy said. With a nod, Sophia asked Amy why it was so difficult for her to accept the idea that there were better-suited parents for the baby than Sophia and Tate.

“This could really be the baby that somebody’s been praying for,” Sophia said. After a moment of silence, Sophia asked Amy to consider her adoption plan. Sophia saw Tate, and she called him over. “I just told my mom about the plan to find an adoptive family she would approve of,” Sophia explained.

“Are you willing to consider?” Tate asked. Amy started to speak when Sophia cried out and grabbed her belly. Tate wanted to go to a doctor, but Sophia stressed the pain was gone. Sophia turned her focus back on Amy. Amy started to answer, but Sophia cried out in pain again. “We need to get her to the hospital,” Amy said as she jumped to her feet.

At the DiMera mansion, Johnny carried in a tray of breakfast for Chanel in their bedroom. “Happy one-year wedding anniversary,” Johnny said. “Breakfast in bed? How lucky am I?” Chanel said. Johnny admitted he had cooked the meal himself. “I haven’t been the most stellar husband lately, and I wanted to make it up to you. Plus, two special occasions in one day is a lot of pressure,” Johnny said. After Chanel tasted the breakfast, she joked that she should hire Johnny.

“I am out of a job now that Body & Soul has moved to LA,” Johnny said. “Are you really sure that you do not want to move with the show?” Chanel asked. Johnny shook his head, no, and he said he was more excited to start a family with Chanel in Salem. “I know that I was the one that suggested [getting pregnant] last night,” Chanel started. After a moment, Chanel said she was worried that she could miscarry again.

“On top of that, your Aunt Kayla said that once you have a molar pregnancy, you’re at risk for having another one,” Chanel said. “She also said that the overall risk is very low,” Johnny countered. Chanel repeated that she was not ready, and Johnny assured her that they did not need to rush into another pregnancy. Chanel suggested they get advice from Kayla, and Johnny agreed.

At the Johnson house, Steve sipped his coffee as Kayla looked around the room. “You looking for something?” Steve said. “The newspaper,” Kayla lied. Steve pointed to the paper. Kayla was speechless. Steve announced he was going to get dressed, and he walked into the bedroom. “Did he forget our anniversary? But it’s Valentine’s Day,” Kayla said. Kayla poured a cup of coffee and grumbled to herself about Steve’s forgetfulness.

“Good thing I made plans for the two of us,” Kayla said. Stephanie walked in and said, “I have something for you.” Kayla grinned. When Stephanie handed Kayla a list of ideas to help save the hospital, Kayla’s hopeful smile disappeared.

“I’m sorry that I couldn’t hold off the press any longer, but this fight isn’t over,” Stephanie promised. Kayla thanked Stephanie for her efforts. When Stephanie made a beeline for the coffee pot, Kayla frowned and whispered, “Et tu, Stephanie?” As Stephanie sipped her coffee, Kayla asked her if she had any plans for the day. “Nope. Just work,” Stephanie said. Steve exited the bedroom.

“What a nice surprise! What’s the occasion?” Steve said. “No occasion. Just came to say hello,” Stephanie said. Kayla announced that she was leaving for work unless Steve or Stephanie needed her for anything. “Not that I can think of,” Steve said. As Kayla started to walk out, Steve encouraged Kayla to stay positive about the hospital. “I have a good feeling that things are going to be okay,” Steve said. Kayla left.

“I can’t believe she actually thinks we forgot your anniversary,” Stephanie said with a giggle. “Come on, little sweetness. We got work to do,” Steve said. Steve and Stephanie decorated the room with banners, balloons, and pictures of Steve and Kayla. “I hope Mom isn’t too mad at us,” Stephanie said. “She could have mentioned our special day without me having to say anything. But she’s stubborn. She wanted me to say something first,” Steve noted. Stephanie asked her dad if he had always been such a romantic. Steve shook his head no.

“Have you ever heard the story of my first Valentine’s Day gift to your mom?” Steve asked. Stephanie said no. Steve told Stephanie how Kayla had given him a card, and he had given her wind-up chattering teeth. Stephanie laughed. “I told you, I had a lot to learn about romance,” Steve said. Steve asked Stephanie about her plans for the day, and Stephanie explained that she was going to dinner with Alex.

“I thought that he was dating that Joy Wesley girl,” Steve said. “He broke things off with her. And we’re back together now,” Stephanie said. Steve said he was glad that Stephanie had taken his advice not to give up on love. With a smirk, Steve said, “Did it have to be another Kiriakis?” Steve told Stephanie he was happy for her.

Johnny and Chanel sat in an exam room at the hospital and thanked Kayla for having squeezed them in. “We’ve actually had a few cancellations. I guess people finally found out that the hospital is declaring bankruptcy,” Kayla said. Kayla added that she was hopeful they could save the hospital. Chanel and Johnny noted that the hospital meant a lot to them, too. “That’s right! You got married here a year ago today. Happy anniversary!” Kayla said. “Right back at you,” Johnny said.

Kayla turned the conversation to Chanel’s bloodwork, and she confirmed that Chanel was not ready to get pregnant. “I’m sorry. I know it’s not what you want to hear,” Kayla said. Confused, Johnny asked what was wrong. Kayla explained that there was an indication that Chanel might have a new tumor growing. “Could it be cancerous?” Chanel asked. Kayla explained that they would need to run more tests.

“Even if so, I’m sure it’s a low risk,” Kayla said. Kayla advised Chanel to hold off on a pregnancy so that they could monitor her blood work. “It just means we’ve got to be patient for a little longer, right?” Johnny said. Chanel asked if her issues would prevent a future pregnancy, and Kayla said she did not think so. “There’s always a risk that you can have another molar pregnancy,” Kayla added. Chanel thanked Kayla for her help. Johnny hugged Chanel.

After the exam, Chanel and Johnny returned to the waiting room to finish up the paperwork. “I know that’s not the news we were hoping for. But look, it’s a low-risk tumor, and we’re going to take care of it,” Johnny said. Johnny argued that Chanel’s health was more important. “I was just really excited about us having a baby and starting a family,” Chanel said. Johnny agreed.

In another hospital exam room, Amy, Tate, and Sophia anxiously waited for Kayla to deliver a diagnosis. Kayla explained that she believed that Sophia had experienced a common pain from the stretching of her abdominal ligaments. While Kayla left to retrieve a pamphlet with treatment information, Sophia and Tate admitted to one another that they had been scared. Tate held Sophia’s hand.

“I don’t understand. You say you want to give your child away, and yet, you both seem to care so much about this baby,” Amy said. “It’s because we care that we want to give it away,” Tate said. With a nod, Sophia said, “That’s what I’ve been trying to tell you, Mom. We just want what’s best for the baby.” After a moment, Amy agreed to allow the adoption to move forward if Amy approved of the couple that Sophia picked. Elated, Sophia hugged Amy and thanked her.

After Tate left and Sophia dressed, she thanked her mother for having changed her mind. Amy said she had realized that Sophia's plan was not just selfishness. “Your feelings about this do matter to me. So I will do my best to respect your decision. I love you,” Amy said. “I love you too,” Sophia said.

In the hallway, Tate texted Holly to tell her that he was running late. Tate looked up from his phone, and he saw Johnny and Chanel. “What are you doing here?” Johnny asked. Tate explained that Sophia had needed to see a doctor but was fine. When Tate mentioned Sophia’s mom was there, Johnny asked if things had improved with Amy. Tate explained that Amy finally agreed to adoption. “Now all we have to do is find the right couple,” Tate said. Chanel and Johnny looked at one another. “Maybe you just did,” Johnny said.

At the Johnson home, Stephanie argued that Kayla would be furious that Steve had lied about an ankle injury. “I had to make an excuse to get her to come home,” Steve said. When Kayla entered, they jumped out from behind the couch and yelled, “Surprise!” Steve handed Kayla a bouquet of yellow roses and wished her a Happy Anniversary.

“I can’t believe you made me think you forgot,” Kayla said. “Trust me, it was killing us,” Stephanie said. Stephanie hugged her mother goodbye and left. “I can’t believe you put me through all that,” Kayla said. Steve kissed her.

In the Horton house, Julie smelled the roses, and she thought about when Doug had read her his poem many years ago. “How can I tell you, what can I say? You’re so delightful in every way. What are the words, dear? Where is the song? Life has a meaning since you came along. I know that without you, I’m nothing at all. I know if you leave me, I’m certain to fall out of this heaven I’ve found myself in, into the darkness of what might have been,” Doug had read.

Julie’s eyes fluttered open when she heard Maggie. “I came to say Happy Valentine’s Day,” Maggie said. Maggie asked about the roses, and Julie said Doug III had given her the flowers. “And even as we speak, he is on the way to the Horton cabin to retrieve a set of lyrics that Doug wrote for me years and years ago,” Julie said. “That’s so kind of him,” Maggie said. Maggie furrowed her brow, and she noted that Doug was in for a surprise. At the Horton Cabin, Holly changed into lingerie, and then she looked at herself in the full-length mirror. Doug III walked into the cabin.
