In the Body & Soul offices, Kate assured Roman on the phone that she had been unaffected by the tainted scripts. “I’m the only one who wasn’t targeted by the lunatic,” Kate said. As Kate chuckled, she flipped over a paper on her desk. It was a publicity photo of Kate with a red X across her face. “Oh my god,” Kate whispered. A worried Roman asked what was wrong, but Kate assured him that it was just an issue on set.
As Kate ended her call, Abe walked in. Kate showed Abe the photo. “Obviously, Whitley is at it again, and we need to call the police,” Kate said. “Easy, Kate. Whitley is no longer a threat,” Abe countered. Abe explained that the photo had been on Whitley’s nightstand. “Did you put it here?” Kate asked. “I wanted you to understand the gravity of this situation. Because it’s up to us to figure out what to do about it,” Abe said. Kate noted that the entertainment business attracted overzealous fans.
“There is a difference between passion and criminal behavior,” Abe said. Kate agreed. “Whitley is a really disturbed person, but that doesn’t mean that she gets to dictate how we produce our show,” Kate said. Kate noted that the crisis was over. Abe asked Kate if she was sure, and he reminded her that Justin planned to sue the hospital. Kate argued that Bonnie was the star of the show, and Justin would not undercut that. “His wife nearly died!” Abe said. “Yeah, and it’s a terrible thing. It really is. But he’s gonna calm down,” Kate argued. Abe countered that too much of the cast was upset and that they only had one solution.
Leo was working in his hotel room as Hattie recuperated on the bed. “Thank you for taking care of me after that psycho nearly killed me,” Hattie said. “Don’t mention it. Or anything else,” a frustrated Leo grumbled. After a couple more requests from Hattie, Leo asked her if she could give him a chance to work on his story. “What’s it about?” Hattie asked. Leo explained that he was writing a story about Charlemagne getting kidnapped and replaced by a duplicate. With a grin, Hattie asked if Marlena was going to play the duplicate. Leo said no.

“You want me to play both parts?” Hattie asked. “Two parts, two paychecks. What do you think? It’s a home run, right?’ Leo asked. Hattie laughed and said no. When Leo noted that it was every actor’s dream to create a second character to play, Hattie disagreed. Hattie reminded Leo that she had kidnapped and impersonated Marlena. “That’s why this is perfect for you. You get to reclaim it. And with the personal experience to draw from, you get to bring truth to the character,” Leo said. Hattie appeared to warm up to the idea, but she still said no.
In the hospital, Stephanie delivered flowers to Kayla in her room. “I am feeling much better since the antidote kicked in,” Kayla said. “What a nightmare!” Stephanie said. When Kayla mentioned that Steve had been upset to have seen her collapse, Stephanie said she understood. “I was pretty freaked out when Alex passed out. Right after he told me he wanted to be with me,” Stephanie said. Stephanie explained that she had resigned as the PR rep for the soap opera because she did not want to give up her relationship with Alex.
“And he’s all in on the relationship?” Kayla asked. “I told him I wanted to be with him, and he responded in kind,” Stephanie said. With a smile, Kayla noted that was what Stephanie had wanted. “Even when I didn’t want to admit it to myself,” Stephanie agreed. “I’m very happy for you, baby,” Kayla said. Stephanie told Kayla that she was disappointed that they would not get to work together on the show.
“After what happened, I cannot complain about you distancing yourself from Body & Soul,” Kayla said. “Yeah. I can’t decide if I picked the worst week to leave or the best,” Stephanie said. Kayla noted that judging by the smile on Stephanie’s face, she had made the right decision. “There’s just one little problem,” Stephanie admitted. Stephanie explained that Alex needed to break up with Joy.
“But they weren’t dating very long, right?” Kayla said. Stephanie noted that after what had happened with Johnny, Joy had grown to depend on Alex. Stephanie added that Joy had also been a victim of the script poisonings. “She’s doing a lot better, just like you. But Alex and I decided that maybe he shouldn’t kick her while she’s down,” Stephanie said. Kayla agreed it was a difficult situation.
Joy was sitting alone in her hospital room, and she thought about the kiss she had witnessed between Alex and Stephanie. Alex walked in. “I was just thinking about you,” Joy admitted. Joy explained that she had been thinking about how Alex had saved her life. “I’m just grateful that Stephanie and I got there when we did,” Alex said. Joy noted that she was lucky, and she hugged Alex. Joy said that she hoped to be released in time for Valentine’s Day.
“I didn’t think you’d be up to doing anything. You should probably take it easy,” Alex said. Joy stressed that she was well enough to go to dinner, and she wanted to thank Alex by buying him dinner. When Alex resisted, Joy asked him if there was a reason that he did not want to go out to dinner with her. Joy asked Alex if he had other plans. Joy and Alex’s phones beeped with the message about the emergency show meeting. “You up to it?” Alex asked. “Yeah. As long as I have you with me,” Joy said.
In the hospital hallway, Bonnie was whimpering in a wheelchair when Johnny arrived. After a moment, Bonnie realized that Johnny was there. “I was just zoning out. Should you be up and about? I mean, I heard about the poisoned scripts,” Bonnie said. Johnny said he was fully healed. Bonnie smiled sadly. “How are you?” Johnny asked. “They just unwired my jaw, so I never thought I’d be so stoked to see a big bowl of Jello,” Bonnie said. Johnny asked Bonnie if she was waiting on someone. Bonnie confessed that she had been too afraid to take the elevator back to her room.
“I feel like Whitley King is on the other side of those doors. Waiting to swallow me up,” Bonnie said. Johnny kneeled before Bonnie, and he assured her that Whitley could not hurt them anymore. A pajama-clad Seth wandered over. Johnny asked Seth if he was okay. Seth confirmed he was feeling much better. Seth looked at Bonnie, and he handed her a document to sign.
“What is it?” Bonnie asked. Seth explained that it was a boilerplate document agreeing not to sue the hospital or its subsidiaries. As Bonnie started to sign the paper, Johnny took her pen and advised her to let Justin review the paperwork first. “I assure you that everything that we do here is above board,” Seth promised. When Seth continued to push, Johnny told him to back off. Johnny reminded Seth that Bonnie was still suffering from the fall.
“And you and I got poisoned. I’ll remind you that things happen in this town. The psycho per capita rate is one of the highest in the nation,” Seth argued. Seth told Bonnie that after everything that had happened, he did not believe that she would want to make things more difficult for the show. “Of course not,” Bonnie said. Seth explained that if the lawsuit continued, the hospital could no longer shoot the show on the premises.
“You wouldn’t want that, would you?” Seth asked. As Bonnie thought about Seth’s words, he encouraged her to sign the paperwork so that the show could continue. Bonnie started to sign the paperwork when all three of them received a text on their phones about a meeting with the cast and crew. The elevator bell dinged, and Bonnie gasped. Leo and Hattie exited the elevator, and they saw that Bonnie was upset.
“I guess we all got that same text?” Leo said. “Abe and Kate probably just want to reassure us that we don’t have to worry about any more poisoned scripts,” Johnny said. Leo nodded in agreement. “By the way, I will never forgive any of you for believing that I wrote that trash,” Leo said about Whitley’s fake scripts.
As Stephanie wheeled Kayla to the meeting for the soap opera, they ran into Alex wheeling Joy into the hallway. “Good to see you! You look so much better,” Stephanie said to Joy. “I’m glad to see that you’re doing better too, Dr. Johnson,” Joy said. Joy added that she was grateful that Stephanie had been with Alex and found her.
Kate and Abe exited the elevator, and they greeted the cast and crew of the show in the waiting area. “First off, we want to say how grateful we are for everyone who received a poisoned script that you’re doing better and that you’re on the road to recovery. And that Bonnie is on the road to recovery,” Kate said. “I do want to reassure all of you that Whitley King is under 24-hour watch at Bayview,” Abe added. Kate informed everyone that the police would be in touch with them about the incident.
“Well, to hell with her. When do we get back to work?” Hattie said. Kate thanked Hattie for her question. “Actually, that’s what we wanted to talk to everyone about,” Kate said. Kate announced that she and Abe prized the health and safety of the cast and that they did not want to return to shooting until they could be sure that it would be a safe environment. “We’ve decided, after very careful consideration, to pull the plug on Body & Soul,” Kate said. The cast and crew gasped. “That’s it?” Hattie said. “It’s just over?” Johnny added. Alex asked if a shutdown was an overreaction to the situation.
“We’re sorry. I know this must come as a shock,” Abe said. “Considering the events of the past few weeks, we just don't feel comfortable returning to production on Body & Soul. We feel like it’s too dangerous. If anyone else got hurt, we couldn’t live with ourselves,” Kate added. Bonnie asked if anyone else on the show got a say in the decision. “I mean, I’m the one who took a header down the elevator shaft, and I’m more than happy to get back on that horse,” Bonnie argued. Kate countered that the fact that so many cast members were in the hospital proved her point that the show should not go on.
“But the show can’t end, not like this,” Seth said. Hattie asked about the story. Abe apologized, and he explained the story would not end. “What do you mean?” Johnny said. “That’s what makes soap operas so special. They never end,” Abe said. Kate explained that when she and Abe had informed the network that they planned to end the show, the network had been upset. “They love the show. It’s a top producer for them. The last thing they wanted to hear was that Body & Soul was ending prematurely,” Kate said.
“I’m so confused. Are we ending or are we not ending?” Hattie asked. “Well, we’re still too concerned with everyone’s safety to continue our production. Which is why the network has offered to step in, buy the rights, and produce the show themselves,” Kate said. “So the show will go on?” Alex asked. Abe said yes, but in Los Angeles. Abe explained that the network wanted to keep the cast, but only if they agreed to relocate to California.
After the meeting broke up, Stephanie pushed Kayla’s wheelchair back to her hospital room. “That must have been a hard decision for Kate and Abe,” Kayla said. “Everyone looked shocked,” Stephanie said. An orderly pushed Bonnie’s wheelchair into Kayla’s room. “I can’t believe this!” Bonnie said. Kayla shrugged and noted that she had missed her window to be on the show. Surprised, Bonnie asked Kayla if that meant that she was not taking the deal. Kayla pointed out that she had a life and a career as a doctor in Salem and that she had only been a temporary recast. Bonnie got teary-eyed.
“Thank you! No, seriously, that is a load off. I was kind of afraid I was going to have to fight you for it,” Bonnie said. Stephanie asked Bonnie if that meant she planned to move to LA. Bonnie noted that she would have to talk to Justin first. “But it kind of feels good to have an option, and if my TV son follows the show, he’s going to need a mama,” Bonnie said. Stephanie asked Bonnie if Alex had decided to go to LA. Bonnie said she had not talked to him yet. “Let’s face it, I mean, he and Joy are the hot young stars. I mean the network execs must be doing everything to try and convince them, right?” Bonnie said.
In Joy’s hospital room, Alex admitted he had been surprised by the announcement about the show. “But it’s not terrible news. I mean, the network loves the show enough to save it,” Joy said. “And they want to move us to LA,” Alex added. Joy said she had always wanted to live in LA, and she was excited by the possibility. As Alex stared at his feet, Joy asked him if he planned to take the offer.
“You want to move with the show to LA?” Alex asked. “Well, don’t you?” Joy countered. Alex noted that his family was in Salem. “Is this really about your family? Or is this about Stephanie?” Joy asked.
In Kayla’s room, Stephanie wondered aloud if Alex would want to move to LA to tape the show. “But his life is here, and so are you,” Kayla said. Seth walked in. “I wanted you to know that I just turned in my letter of resignation. I’m leaving for California,” Seth said. Kayla was shocked that Seth had decided to give up his medical work. Seth explained that acting was his real calling. Kayla wished Seth luck. When Seth urged Kayla to join him in LA, Kayla noted that her calling was at the hospital. “I’m not sure that’s gonna be for much longer,” Seth said. Seth explained that the hospital was on the edge of bankruptcy.
In the waiting area of the hospital, Leo asked Hattie and Johnny if they planned to move to LA. “Well, I’m definitely going,” Hattie said. With a shake of his head, Johnny said he was hesitant to disrupt his life with Chanel. “We’re just kind of getting back on track,” Johnny said. Leo admitted that after a lifetime of traveling, he was leery of upsetting his own relationship with Javi. “Maybe you don’t have to,” Johnny said. Johnny explained that, unlike a director, a writer could work from anywhere.
“So you could just tell the network you want to stay on as head writer and keep writing from here,” Johnny said. Leo nodded as he thought about the prospect. After Leo and Johnny left, Bonnie returned to the waiting area. Hattie asked Bonnie if she planned to move to LA. Bonnie admitted that she needed to think about it and then talk to Justin. When Bonnie noted that she did not think she could commute, Hattie noted that the show might fly her out as needed.
“I’m in no shape to make any life-changing decisions at the moment, if you know what I mean,” Bonnie said. Hattie nodded in agreement. Bonnie added that the good news was that Kayla did not want the part, so Bonnie did not need to compete for it. “I’ve been in a fight with you. That’s no place I want to be!” Hattie said with a chuckle. “You’re no pushover, you know yourself,” Bonnie countered. Hattie told Bonnie that she hoped Bonnie would take the part so they could hang out in L.A. together.
Back at the Body & Soul office, Kate and Abe talked about the response to their meeting. “Everyone looked so disappointed,” Abe said. “None more than you,” Kate countered. Kate reminded Abe that the venture had not been a total disappointment. “We made a tidy little profit running that thing,” Kate said. Abe noted that the venture had never been about the money for him. “I wanted something new, rewarding. I feel very, very lucky for the experience,” Abe said. Kate agreed.
“We make a damn good team, right?” Abe said. “Yes, we do,” Kate countered. Kate and Abe agreed that the good memories of the show had outweighed the bad ones. “When we started out, we had no idea what we were doing,” Kate said with a chuckle. “We had less than no idea,” Abe said. Kate poured two glasses of whiskey and toasted to the show. “To Body & Soul. Long may she live,” Abe said. As Kate and Abe sipped their glasses, Leo walked in.
“Is there something we can do for you?” Kate asked. Leo thanked Abe and Kate for having taken a chance on him as their head writer. “‘Writing for Body & Soul has truly been an honor and a privilege,” Leo said. Abe told Leo that he should be proud of the work he had done on the show. Leo asked for the network contact information. “I’m sorry to have to tell you this, but they’re bringing in another head writer,” Kate said.
