At Paulina and Abe’s place, Johnny entered the main room and saw Chanel surrounded by a barrage of toys and other baby items. He wiped the strained expression off his face before approaching her. Chanel was happily looking at more baby supplies on the computer. When she expressed impatience at Belle’s lack of contact regarding the adoption, Johnny’s troubled expression returned. Chanel confided that she was still worried about Mrs. Choi changing her mind, especially after EJ’s awakening.

When Johnny coldly affirmed that he wished his father was dead, a disturbed Chanel changed the subject to their living circumstances. She thought they should invest in a house so they’d have plenty of room for the baby. Johnny cautioned her not to get too excited before they even looked at a house. Chanel got a text from Felicity celebrating Felicity’s success in a gymnastics competition at school. She asked Johnny if she could go to the event and support Felicity.

Johnny smiled and stated that Chanel would be a great parent. But when Chanel returned the sentiment to Johnny, he was visibly affected. After Chanel left, he picked up a baby outfit Chanel had gotten, sighed, and made his way to the door.

At Salem High, Sophia greeted Tate at his locker and made small talk about an ongoing school Olympics-style event. When Tate noted Sophia’s good mood, she expressed her relief that their baby would be going to a good home. Sophia suggested that the adoption might bring a chance for Holly and Tate to reconcile, but he reminded her that their most recent break-up was mostly because of Doug III. Tate wanted to talk about something more “fun,” like Sophia’s 18th birthday celebration. Sophia said that since her birthday happened to coincide with prom, she likely wouldn’t be having a party.

Tate believed they should make prom Sophia’s birthday party. She said she didn’t want to go since she was pregnant and without a date. Tate invited Sophia to the prom as his date, but she blurted out, “No.” While she initially attributed her hesitation to not wanting to wear a maternity prom dress, Sophia eventually confessed that she thought Tate might be asking her just to make Holly jealous. Tate pledged his invitation had nothing to do with Holly, but he would leave it to Sophia whether she felt comfortable going with him or not.

Before Sophia could answer Tate, Chanel approached and greeted the teens. Chanel said she’d come to give Felicity a gift, but then she admitted she had another motive for her arrival, too. Chanel presented both Sophia and Tate with a bouquet of flowers. She was thankful the duo hadn’t given up on Johnny and her becoming the baby’s parents, despite all the setbacks. Chanel conveyed her immense gratitude to Sophia and Tate for giving her the greatest gift of all: the opportunity to become a parent. Sophia and Tate attested that they were the ones who were most grateful because they knew their baby would be raised in a loving home. Chanel teared up and hugged Sophia.

Later, Tate and Sophia returned from Felicity’s ceremony. Tate wished Felicity’s brother, Aaron, could be there as well. The conversation turned back to prom, with Tate again asking Sophia to be his date. Sophia acquiesced with a “fine” and a smile. Tate returned the smile and said he would take it.

Outside the Brady Pub, Steve and Kayla approached the door with luggage in tow. Both agreed it was good to be home, and both were optimistic that Andrew and Paul’s lead would locate John.

Inside the pub, Kayla raved to Roman about the success of the bachelor auction. Roman noted that his sister had another reason for being in a great mood. Kayla admitted she was elated that Steve would soon be home, but she also felt guilty that Marlena still didn’t know John's whereabouts. Roman reassured his sister that John would be found. The siblings’ chat was interrupted by a call Kayla received from Hope.

After a few beats, Kayla exclaimed, “Oh, no!” She later hung up, with a request for Hope to call her back if Hope had any more news. Roman surmised the call had been about Bo. Just then, a smiling Steve and Marlena entered. Their smiles dissolved when Kayla ran into Steve’s arms and cried, “It’s Bo.”

Kayla composed herself and updated Roman, Steve, and Marlena on Hope’s call. Bo had contracted an infection from his ventilator and was currently in isolation, on a large dose of antibiotics. The doctors still feared it might be too late and that Bo might endure massive organ failure. When Steve asked if anything else could be done, Kayla suddenly remembered a man at the hospital – Dr. Russell – who had been working on a ground-breaking treatment for sepsis. The only problem: the doctor’s treatment hadn’t gone through clinical trials and was far away from approval.

Later, Roman and Marlena convened at a table. While Roman was worried about Bo, he still wanted to be there for Marlena. Just then, Johnny entered and caught Marlena and Roman’s attention. Johnny warmly welcomed his grandmother home and asked about his Grandpa John; Marlena informed him there was still no news. While Roman went to grab Johnny a beer, Marlena asked her grandson how he was doing. She had talked with Sami and knew about Johnny’s struggles with EJ's shooting and with learning about his conception.

Johnny admitted that talking with Sami had helped. The talk had not, however, changed his feelings about his father. Johnny implied his life would be better if his father were dead, which compelled Marlena to caution her grandson about what he said in the midst of an attempted murder investigation. Johnny elaborated that his rift with EJ hadn’t just impacted him but Chanel, too. Troubles with the adoption had resulted from Mrs. Choi’s worries about EJ.

When Marlena said that Mrs. Choi no longer seemed to be an impediment, Johnny suggested that the new obstacle was him. He was having serious doubts about his ability to be a father and had second thoughts about the adoption. Marlena asked how Chanel felt about Johnny’s reservations, but he confirmed he hadn’t shared his doubts with her. Marlena convinced Johnny that he should talk things over with Chanel because keeping silent wouldn’t be fair to anyone involved, especially the baby.

Later, Johnny met Chanel back at Paulina and Abe’s place. Chanel’s contentment faltered when Johnny, with a grim expression, revealed he needed to discuss the baby immediately.

At Shawn’s place, Shawn ended a call with Hope in which she had apparently persuaded him not to travel to see Bo. Jada observed Shawn’s upset state and asked him what had happened. An emotional Shawn turned to her and proclaimed, “My dad’s dying.” Jada gave her sympathies, but Shawn soon became consumed by his guilt. He blamed himself for his dad’s condition, and he didn’t know how he would face his mom or live with himself if Bo died because of him.

Shawn sat down with Jada and opened up about his childhood. His mom had been gone for a large part of it, so it had just been his dad and him. He fondly remembered living with Bo on a houseboat and fishing every day. His dad had even taught him how to swim. Shawn brokenly affirmed that Bo was “the best father” and “the best man” he had ever known; Jada comforted Shawn with a hug.

Jada then told Shawn about her own experiences with her father, Marcus, who had succumbed to a long illness. Jada was grateful that she had gotten to tell her dad she loved him one final time, but she still felt haunted by the guilt of not becoming a doctor like he had wanted. A part of her believed she could have saved him if she’d had medical training. She had come to Salem so that she could be surrounded by people who had known and loved her dad.

Jada thought Shawn would benefit from staying in Salem and surrounding himself with the love of Bo’s family and friends. Shawn sheepishly apologized for having transformed his attempt to cheer Jada up into his own venting session. Jada said there was no place she’d rather be, then suggested Shawn and she get some fresh air. Shawn was receptive to the idea.

Meanwhile, in Horton Town Square, Kayla and Steve comforted each other about Bo. Steve firmly believed that since Bo had cheated death once, he would do it again. Kayla agreed her brother was stubborn enough to do just that. She still felt helpless to do anything for Bo.

When she spotted Jada and Shawn, Kayla hugged her nephew and expressed her regret about Bo. Shawn had called his sisters and again lamented how much the family probably blamed him for the shooting. Kayla assured him that wasn’t true.

Later, Steve and Jada bonded over ice cream, which had been one of Jada and Marcus’ favorite pastimes. They rejoined Kayla and discovered her decidedly more upbeat. Kayla thought she had a way to help Bo.
