Days of our Lives wins Writers Guild of America Award

After a tumultuous year for television and movie writers, Days of our Lives still took home the gold at the WGA awards.

Days of our Lives beat out General Hospital for the Writers Guild of America Award in the Daytime Drama category on Sunday, April 14. DAYS and GH were the only two soaps competing for this coveted prize.

After a year in which Hollywood was rocked by strikes, including the WGA strike and the Screen Actors Guild strike, the awards were presented in two concurrent ceremonies in both New York City and Los Angeles.

The winning writing team from DAYS included Ron Carlivati, Ryan Quan, Sonja Alar, Jazmen Darnell Brown, Joanna Cohen, Carolyn Culliton, Richard Culliton, Cheryl Davis, Kirk Doering, Christopher Dunn, Jamey Giddens, David Kreizman, Henry Newman, Dave Ryan, and Katherine D. Schock.

The competing writing team from GH included Dan O'Connor, Chris Van Etten, Ashley Cook, Emily Culliton, Suzanne Flynn, Charlotte Gibson, Lucky Gold, Kate Hall, Elizabeth Korte, Shannon Peace, Stacey Pulwer, Dave Rupel, Lisa Seidman, and Scott Sickles.

According to Michael Fairman TV, Carlivati submitted scripts with a humorous angle, but also mixed with heartbreaking drama that centered around the funeral of Victor Kiriakis, played by the late John Aniston.

"I like to have some humor, but it was also the funeral, and then there was Sarah giving birth, and then Vivian's crashing the reading of the will," Carlivati said.

This is Days of our Lives' fourth consecutive win.
