Zach Tinker opens up about DAYS exit

Zach Tinker has wrapped up his yearlong run as Days of our Lives' Sonny, but the actor hopes he'll be back in Salem some day soon.

Zach Tinker may have exited the role of Sonny Kiriakis, but the actor remains optimistic that it won't be the last time that Days of our Lives viewers see him on the show.

''What's nice about soaps is you're not ever really gone unless they recast you," Tinker told Soap Opera Digest. "So it's nice knowing that at least, for now, I am still Sonny."

As for being a recast himself, Tinker claims that he was never worried about that.

"It's always a great opportunity to step into a new character and get to that," Tinker explained.

Tinker stepped into the role of Sonny back in 2022. It was an unexpected casting and one that had some soap fans seeing double: he was also playing Fen Baldwin on CBS's The Young and the Restless. It was that multi-soap presence that helped him become fast friends with another double soaper Greg Rikaart (Leo Stark, DAYS; Kevin Fisher, Y&R).

Tinker made a brief cameo on Y&R earlier this month to mark his on-screen mom Tracey Bregman's 40th anniversary as Lauren Fenmore. In the episode, Tinker's Fen was revealed to be gay,

Tinker has nothing but praise for his DAYS on-screen husband, Chandler Massey (Will Horton). "He's amazing. You'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who doesn't love Chandler," Tinker told Digest. "He made it very easy to be in a couple with him. I felt very comfortable and safe."

While it may be a while before Tinker pops up in the world of soaps, the actor has already landed a post-DAYS gig. Tinker has joined the cast of the CBS primetime drama Fire Country. The actor shared that he has been filming for several months in Canada. His character, Collin O'Reilly, is the firefighter son of a legendary firefighter who passed away.

If you fear that you might pick up a new show that ends up being canceled, this might make you want to give Fire Country a try. The show has already been picked up for a second season.

Tinker also had a small but pivotal role in the most recent season of ABC's Big Sky. The season wrapped up earlier this year, but all episodes are streaming on Hulu.
