Alison Sweeney wraps her time as DAYS' Sami -- maybe for good

Days of our Lives' Alison Sweeney says that Sami has "really put the kibosh on a return," meaning she may never step foot in Salem again.

Alison Sweeney's Sami Brady is once again set to leave Days of our Lives, and this exit may actually be her last. The notorious troublemaker recently got a serious dose of her own medicine when she realized that Lucas (Bryan Dattilo) was behind her kidnapping and that E.J. (Dan Feuerriegel) slept with her sister Belle (Martha Madison). Sami definitely isn't one to take either bombshell lying down, and what she does in revenge could kill any chances of the character having a future on the show.

"Sami really put the kibosh on a return," Sweeney reveals in the latest issue of Soap Opera Digest.

But there's no need to panic just yet, the actress stresses. "Never say never about what could happen next," she teases. "I'm always open to it."

Time will tell whether or not Sami will ever come back to Salem, but if this was Sweeney's last hurrah as her iconic character, she enthuses that it was a blast to get one more wedding into her history with the NBC soap opera.

"I go around telling people confidently that I can name them all and now I'm like, 'Oh, my God. That adds one more to the list!'" she says with a laugh. "It's hard to keep track. But I loved it."

The actress also says she was super impressed by Dattilo's performance in his scenes, as Lucas tried his best to explain his betrayal and convince Sami to stick around.

"He was so good in it," she enthuses. "It's great to get to watch that. I always love visiting Salem."

Sweeney joined DAYS in 1993 and played Sami Brady until 2014. She has made sporadic appearances since that time and revealed in December of last year that she will likely never return in a full-time capacity.

"I love playing Sami but no, full-time is not the plan for me," she revealed, explaining that being on contract at DAYS wouldn't allow her to work on other projects that she loves. "I produce and develop content for Hallmark, and for other streaming services, and I love getting to do my own projects; I love producing. It's really been such a joy, and such a new, fresh, fun challenge for me."

She added, "I do feel so blessed to be able to have the best of both worlds. The opportunity to go back to DAYS, it feels like going home again."
