NBC's Days of our Lives has reportedly finished production on its 56th season and is now waiting to find out if it will be renewed for season 57 or face its final sand in the hourglass.
Will Days of our Lives be picked up for a 57th season, or is the NBC soap opera going to be canceled this year? That is the question on everyone's minds now that the long-running drama series has reportedly wrapped production on its 56th season.
DAYS insider Jason47 reveals that the show finished filming its current season on Friday, April 16, after taping 112 episodes over the last fourteen weeks without breaks to make up for filming delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. This means that the soap has filmed all of the episodes ordered by NBC in the network's January 2020 renewal deal that promised to keep DAYS on the air through September 2021.
Much like what happened in 2019, cast and crew from DAYS now must wait for NBC and/or Sony Pictures Television (which distributes the show for producer Corday Productions, Inc.) to make a renewal announcement. Or, in the worst-case scenario, a cancellation announcement that would confirm that DAYS will come to an end this September.

As soap fans likely recall, DAYS made an extraordinary move in the fall of 2019 to ensure a renewal; the NBC soap opera released all of the actors in its cast from their contracts as a cost-cutting measure meant to help convince the network to give the show a 56th season. Will the same thing happen this time around?
Though it saves money, releasing cast members from their contracts is a risky move. Producers have no guarantee that the actors who are released from their commitment to DAYS will be available if and when the show resumes production.
But there is an upside, businesswise. As an insider explained back in 2019, releasing a cast from its contractual obligations is "a shrewd -- if cynical -- business move. If DAYS gets picked up, [Corday] can offer the actors new contacts at a reduced rate and with a 'take-it-or-leave' it attitude. Worst case scenario, they lose half their cast. Best case scenario [for Corday], everyone agrees to return at a lower salary."
As of now, there's been no word on the status of DAYs' cast now that the soap opera has reportedly taped the last episodes of season 56. Soap Central will keep you informed with any updates as they come.
For fans who are worried that DAYS may be facing cancellation, it could be helpful to revisit a comment made by former NBC Entertainment Chairman Paul Telegdy shortly before confirmation of the show's last renewal: "We are of course carrying on with Days of our Lives," he said at the time. "We love it. Millions of Americans watch it every week... I know this will be good news for the fans."
