INTERVIEW: Days of our Lives' Lucas Adams on Emmy noms, retro fashion, and playing a supervillain

Days of our Lives star Lucas Adams (Tripp Dalton) opens up about his shock over receiving an Emmy nomination, his possible Peaky Blinders red carpet look, and an upcoming film that pushed him to his limits.

Anyone that watches Days of our Lives would think that Lucas Adams (Tripp Dalton) is super suave and confident. After all, the Texas native isn't just handsome, but he's also talented -- the latter of which was just confirmed by his Daytime Emmy nomination in the Outstanding Younger Actor category. But surprisingly, the actor confesses that he hasn't been very confident when it comes to his daytime acting skills. Adams spoke with Soap Central shortly after the Emmy nominations were announced, and in addition to sharing his reservations about his work at DAYS, he opened up about his shock over his nomination, his retro red carpet fashion ideas, his superstitious on-set routine, and the upcoming film in which he plays a nasty misogynist.

Soap Central: Congratulations on your Emmy nomination, Lucas!

Lucas Adams: Thank you so much. I appreciate it.

Soap Central: How does it feel to get the nomination?

Adams: Oh, it feels fantastic. I was extremely excited because I wasn't really sure I was going to be nominated, honestly. So, I was very excited.

Soap Central: How did you find out you'd been nominated?

Adams: My mom and [family] were watching The Talk and texted. They are two hours ahead of us, so I found out from them and on Twitter right away.

Soap Central: So, how did you react when you heard the exciting news?

Adams: Oh, I was very excited. It was funny though -- I was by myself, so I kind of had to just be excited all by myself for a second when I first found out. But then a few of my friends came over afterwards, and so I finally got to break the news in person. But at first, I was just kind of celebrating the news by myself.

Soap Central: Sometimes that's the best way because then you can scream and dance around without feeling too ridiculous!

Adams: Oh, yeah! You can do whatever you want, no judgment!

Soap Central: Your family found out before you, and then you shared the news with your friends when they came over. Was there anyone else that you texted or called to share the good news with?

Adams: I texted my manager and my grandparents. My grandparents didn't watch because they don't even know what The Talk even is, I don't think. They're about 80 years old, and they don't watch too much TV, anyway. But they're pretty psyched. And I called and texted some of my friends, but I mostly waited to tell them in person. But after they saw the tweets and the news on Instagram, they were freaking out. So, that was great.

Soap Central: Which scenes did you submit for your reel?

Adams: I ended up submitting the beginning of Ciara [Victoria Konefal] and Tripp's breakup and basically the ending of that. I decide to leave, and there's a scene between me and her in her room of just me packing up my stuff and trying to take off. And also the lead-up to the breakup, as well.

Soap Central: Was it difficult to narrow it down to those scenes? Or did you know when you filmed them that you maybe had some material for your reel?

Adams: I had a feeling that they would be good scenes, but I honestly wasn't super confident in myself this year, so I was trying to figure out what scenes that I could use that I thought were strong enough. I'm a little hard on myself sometimes. But I was working on my reel in Texas and my family was watching it, and these scenes came up, and they said, "You should try using those," and I was like, "You know, I just might do that." So, I watched a few more episodes before submitting, just to see if I wanted to submit anything else, but it all came down to those scenes themselves.

Soap Central: What do you think about the competition in your category? One is from your own show -- Kyler Pettis [Theo Carver] -- so does that influence how competitive you feel?

Adams: Oh, no, no, no. In this aspect, I'm not competitive really at all. I would love to win; that would be great. But especially if Kyler wins, I would be so happy for him. He's one of the nicest people. I haven't had the pleasure of meeting some of the other nominees, but I've heard great things about them, so for whoever wins, I would be happy for them.

Soap Central: Have you been in contact with anyone else from your show who has been nominated? DAYS had so many nominations this year!

Adams: Yes! I've messaged Victoria and Olivia [Rose Keegan, Claire Brady]. We started a group chat talking about it and how cool it was. And Eric Martsolf [Brady Black], I messaged him on Instagram, and we went back and forth for a second. So, yeah, I've been in contact a little bit on there, just trying to congratulate everybody and also to congratulate the show itself.

Soap Central: Have you thought about what you might wear to the ceremony?

Adams: Oh, yeah! I've thought about it. [Laughs] I've been thinking about a possible traditional black tux, but I would love some suspenders or something like that -- maybe a cummerbund. I haven't decided. I kind of want to go a little James Bond-y, but I also saw this tux online that I really like that's very old school. It's dark grey, and it kind of reminded of me a Peaky Blinders feel. I would totally rock that, as well. I love Peaky Blinders, so I would totally wear that.

Soap Central: Are you the type to wear a lucky charm?

Adams: Oh, I had a ring that I used to wear for events like this all the time. But yeah, everything I do during the day [is a ritual]. I'm a very superstitious person, so I always have lucky things and this and that that I have to do throughout the day to kind of make sure the day is correct.

Soap Central: Is there anything that you do on set that's superstitious? Like you don't walk over ropes or under cameras or something like that?

Adams: Well, I never walk underneath a ladder, for one. I mean, that's a given! You never do that. But no, on set, I don't have that many things. I do have my routine on set, though, a whole routine that I go through. And if it's a little off, I'm like, "Oh, crap!" [Deep breath then a laugh] Like for example, I always get a cup of coffee on my way out. I don't drink any coffee until I'm done with work. Stuff like that.

Soap Central: Did you end up celebrating your Emmy nomination at all?

Adams: Not as much yet, because over the weekend, I had a movie premiere, so I went and saw that. My friend and I got to celebrate for a second about that, and then on Saturday, it was a friend of mine's birthday, so we were celebrating her. So, I haven't gotten to officially celebrate it yet.

Soap Central: What was the movie that premiered? Something that you star in?

Adams: Yeah, it's called Confessional, and I play a terrible human being in this movie! [Laughs] So, that was really nice to do. I'm not a good person. It's like the epitome of misogyny -- not a good person at all. But it was really fun getting to play this villainous style character, and I thought it turned out really well on-screen. I was really happy about that.

Soap Central: Is the film something that's being shown in theaters now for people to see?

Adams: Right now, no. It was premiering at a film festival in Beverly Hills, the Method Film Festival. That was the first time I had seen it, but I have no idea where it's going to be after that. I'm trying to figure that out for myself! So, we'll have to wait and see.
