INTERVIEW: DAYS' Vincent Irizarry on Deimos' musical talents

Days of our Lives' Vincent Irizarry (Deimos Kiriakis) opens up about the "nerve-wracking" experience of playing the piano for the NBC soap.

Days of our Lives' Deimos Kiriakis is a man of many talents, and one of his skills will be literal music to fans' ears. He's an accomplished piano player, which viewers will see during today's episode when the character plays the entirety of Moonlight Sonata.

Portrayer Vincent Irizarry (ex-David Hayward, All My Children; ex-David Chow, The Young and the Restless) is no stranger to music, having played Guiding Light's rock star character, Lujack, in the 80s. But he admits that sitting down at DAYS to play Beethoven's famous piece -- live, no less -- was quite nerve wracking.

"It's been a long time since I've played classical piano," Irizarry shares with Soap Central. "I've done at least six pieces for the show by now, and I'm playing all of it live. [This one] is for the whole second act of the show, over five minutes long, and I couldn't make any mistakes at all because I couldn't stop and start again. It was pretty much the whole piece."

The resulting pressure, he explains, was enough to make him feel some major butterflies. "It was a lot, and it was nerve wracking," he says. "It was a quiet set with everyone watching and listening, and I was hoping and praying in my mind, 'I've got to get through this!' Because if I didn't, we'd have to go all the way back to the beginning! But it was fun, and it has been really great. And the way it's incorporated into the story is really great, too. It plays beautifully with what is going on with the character."

If you're keeping track of such things, Irizarry played "Moonlight Sonata" during his time on All My Children -- but it was a much shorter snippet.

Be sure to tune in to the Monday, May 23, episode of DAYS to catch Irizarry's special musical moment, and for more from the New York native about his new role, check out this feature interview he did with Soap Central back in March.
