Right in the thick of February Sweeps drama comes real-life drama for Days our Lives: the soap just swapped out head writers.
Days of our Lives' head writers Gary Tomlin and Christopher Whitesell have been let go, and scribes Dena Higley and Josh Griffith will be taking the helm effective February 16, Soap Opera Digest reports.
The move to oust Tomlin and Whitesell comes amid a vocal outcry from fans that the show's storylines have lost their focus and that too many newcomers have taken over as leading characters.
Tomlin and Whitsell were named head writers in April 2012, and at the time, co-executive producer Greg Meng remarked that he was "excited and look[ed] forward to the stories of romance, suspense and intrigue this new dream team plans to tell."

Soap fans are no strangers to the incoming writers' work. No only did Griffith recently end a two-year term as head scribe at The Young and the Restless, he's written for General Hospital, As the World Turns, One Life to Live, and Santa Barbara.
Meanwhile, Higley is no stranger to Salem, having served as the show's head writer on two previous occasions: in 2003 as well as from 2008 to 2011. In 2012, Higley earned a Daytime Emmy win for Outstanding Writing Team for her work on DAYS. She earned a previous Emmy in 2008 as part of the One Life to Live writing team.
What do you think of DAYS witching out the head writing team? Do you think it was a good move? And do you think Griffith and Higley were the best options? Share your thoughts in our Comments section below, on our message boards, or by click here to submit feedback.
