Days of our Lives marks a milestone this week, a milestone that many fans of the NBC soap thought might never happen. The show joins an elite group of television programs that have notched more than 11,000 broadcasts.

On January 21, Days of our Lives will air its 11,000th episode. The NBC soap becomes just the fourth television in broadcast history to reach that historic milestone. The other programs to broadcast 11,000 or more episodes -- all of them soap operas -- are Guiding Light, As the World Turns, and General Hospital.

There will be no special on-screen events to mark the milestone, but that doesn't mean that the show won't be rolling out some explosive storytelling to mark the occasion. The episode comes just a few days before Days of our Lives bids farewell to Deidre Hall (Marlena Evans)and Drake Hogestyn (John Black).

Days of our Lives debuted on November 8, 1965. The show, the last remaining on NBC, has been the subject of cancellation talk over the past few years. Late last year, however, NBC reached a deal that will keep the soap on the air at least through 2010.
