1) When Carly Manning was buried alive
Carly Manning's past started haunting her after she decided to settle down in Salem. Carly fell in love with Bo Brady and wanted to live in peace, but her plans were soon foiled when she started having wild nightmares.
The subject of these disturbing dreams was Carly's child, whom she had long believed to have been dead. Right after the birth of the child, Vivian Alamain had told Carly that the baby didn't survive since it was born with too much water inside its brain. Despite this, Carly eventually made the shocking discovery that the child, now called Nicholas, was alive and had been adopted by Vivian.
In the ensuing custody battle between Vivian and Carly, the former ended up sedating Carly to the extent that she wouldn't wake up. He then topped it off with a few more herbs that brought Carly to a state of induced coma. She was then put into a special coffin fitted with a radio and oxygen tanks. Vivian's sinister plan provided for Carly to slowly suffocate to death after being buried alive, all the while he disses her through the radio.
Vivian eventually came back to his senses and dug Carly up from the grave. Talk about revenge!
2) When Marlena was possessed
Marlena Evans was a popular character on Days of Our Lives, and she worked as a psychiatrist. One of the most chilling storylines from the soap opera in the 1990s involved Marlena being possessed by the devil. All hell broke loose after Stefano DiMera stealthily entered her home one night in a bid to hypnotize and manipulate her into loving him. DiMera failed to realize that his attempts to brainwash her might leave her vulnerable to dark forces.
Fans of the show will remember how terrifying it was to watch Marlena being possessed by the devil on Christmas Eve, when the devil made her levitate on her bed and when she cast her yellow eyes on the others. Marlena was eventually rescued from Satan by Father John Black, who saved the day by performing an exorcism on her.
3) When murder victims abound Melaswen island
This storyline was featured on Days of Our Lives back in 2003 when an infamous serial killer terrified the town of Salem. Known by the moniker of the Salem Stalker, the serial killer was single-handedly responsible for the death of many of the show's popular characters, including Victor Kiriakis, Maggie Horton, Roman Brady, and others. Particularly nasty was the murder of the veteran character Alice Horton, who was killed by asphyxiation with a donut in her mouth!
The show then delivered one of its major twists by revealing the serial killer to be none other than psychiatrist Marlena Evans. The police were subsequently hot on her trail and ended up killing her following a shootout. Nevertheless, the supernatural touch of the storyline wasn't entirely exhausted, and soon enough, the show revealed that Marlena and her victims were living it up in the tropical Melaswen island.
What appeared to be even more bizarre was the fact that Melaswen island mirrored the town of Salem in every way possible. Marlena, along with the previously thought to be dead characters, soon returned to their home in Salem but found out to their dismay that a lot had changed on Days of Our Lives in the meanwhile.
4) When Stefano DiMera was revived
Stefano DiMera was the arch-criminal on the daily soap. He met his end in 2016, but his associate and right-hand man, Dr. Wilhelm Rolf, couldn't reconcile with DiMera's death. Rolf soon fixated on keeping DiMera's spirit alive by hook or by crook. In a desperate bid to bring DiMera back, Rolf ends up installing a chip loaded with Stefano's brain memories into the body of another character by the name of Steve Johnson.
The resulting concoction, which featured Stefano's memories inside Steve's body, was known, oddly enough, as 'Stevano'. In the same vein, Rolf made sure that Hope manifested herself once again as Princess Gina. Their goal was to ensure the separation of Days of Our Lives couple Marlena Evans and John Black.
5) When the Gemini Twins arrived in town
Since we're ranking all the supernatural storylines from Days of Our Lives, it is imperative to mention that one time when an extra-terrestrial being landed in the town of Salem. It all started when a young couple, Jason Cook and Kirsten Storms, were having a romantic date under the stars.
All of a sudden, and much to their horror, they spotted a strange figure landing nearby. The beings that landed were covered in silver. The couple agreed to help the two beings as they didn't speak any English. The beings eventually came to be known as the Gemini Twins.
