Sean Wilson first joined Coronation Street in 1985 as Martin Platt until his exit in 2005. His time on the show left a huge impact on fans which is why his brief stint back in 2018 brought in a lot of excitement. After several years away, we will get to see Sean Wilson on Coronation Street once again. He has started filming for his return as of July 24, and viewers will find him back on their screen in October.

Let's take a look at what Sean Wilson has in store for his return to Weatherfield.

Who is Coronation Street character Martin Platt?

Martin Platt joined Coronation Street as a young nurse at Weatherfield General Hospital. He had many interesting storylines throughout his time on the soap. One of which is his marriage to Gail Tilsley, played by Helen Worth, and the struggles they faced during their relationship.

As a married couple, Martin and Gail had to deal with infidelity. Martin had an affair with a fellow nurse, Rebecca Hopkins (Jill Halfpenny). Due to the hardships during their marriage, Gail and Martin got divorced. During their marriage, Martin stepped up as a stepfather to Gail's children, Nick and Sarah-Louise, and he and Gail eventually had their own child, David Platt (Jack P. Shepherd).

Martin's career as a nurse was met with a lot of professional struggles throughout and caused a rift between him and his family. When Martin made the choice to move to Liverpool with his girlfriend Robyn (Clare Calbraith), he left his son David utterly broken-hearted. Luckily, Martin was able to repair their relationship before leaving Weatherfield and driving off to Liverpool.

What happened to Sean Wilson?

Sean Wilson left the soap in 2005 due to disagreements with the show's producers. His character left Weatherfield to start a new life with his girlfriend, Robyn, but he reprised his role briefly in 2018 amid David's difficult storyline.

After leaving the soap, Wilson trained as a professional chef and established himself in the culinary world, founding the Saddleworth Cheese Company. His cheese won many awards and Wilson made television appearances as a chef and participated in food festivals, showcasing his culinary talents.

Sean Wilson is set to return to the soap this year but only for a few months to honor Gail's exit from the soap.

"It was great to be invited back to Coronation Street again, to contribute to Helen's exit story. Playing Martin has been a joy since day one and, in a way, I'll be slipping back to where I left off, which no doubt will throw a spanner into the heart of the Platt family. It's just like slipping on an old and comfortable jumper from the back of the wardrobe… I'm looking forward to reuniting with my TV family," Sean stated.

The soap writers have also added that his son David will be shocked by Martin's sudden return after abandoning Gail all those years ago. Only time will tell if Martin's return will be filled with laughter and love or drama and strife.
