Matt Wolf, an award-winning filmmaker, has a new project: a documentary called “Soaps,” that looks at the Bell family, and focuses attention on one of their hit shows, “The Bold and the Beautiful.” The director posted on X (formerly known as Twitter) today, “My next film is about the world of soap operas!”

The documentary will take viewers behind the scenes into the world of soaps, and in particular, The Bold and the Beautiful. Bradley Bell, who is the executive producer and head writer, is the son of William Bell and Lee Phillip Bell, the creators of The Bold and the Beautiful and The Young and the Restless. The Bell family is featured in the movie, as is how soaps are made.

Amplify Pictures CEO and Soaps producer Joe Lewis told Variety. ““Soaps have built universes that generations have escaped into, but the world behind the camera is just as fascinating as the drama onscreen. Matt’s films uniquely explore the intersection of creativity and legacy, and we’re thrilled to work with him on an epic look at this significant but often overlooked cultural institution.”

“When I first visited the set of ‘The Bold and the Beautiful,’ I was blown away by the Herculean effort that goes into bringing these stories to life. It’s a fascinating and unexpected world that is ripe for a documentary,” Wolf shared with Variety.

The director added, “I’m so grateful to be welcomed by the Bell family, and the tight knit group of actors and behind-the-scenes crew, who tirelessly bring this show to life and have made the genre flourish. Amplify Pictures is the perfect partner because they understand the sweet spot between art and popular culture, which is the core of this project.”

“Soaps” is produced by Joe Lewis and Lauren Haber for Amplify Pictures, Wolf for Polari Pictures, and Lindsay Panell. The documentary is executive produced by Rachel Eggebeen and Colin King Miller for Amplify Pictures. The film is financed by Amplify Pictures and is currently under production in Los Angeles.

Per Variety, Amplify Pictures is an Emmy-winning studio that develops, finances and produces award-winning, commercially-driven scripted series, documentary projects and theatrical productions.

According to IMDb, Wolf is known for directing Wild Comnination: A Portrait of Arthur Russell, Bayard & Me, Teenage, and Spaceship Earth, and the Emmy-nominated The Stroll about New York’s Meatpacking District.

No release date has been given yet, but stay tuned to Soap Central for more information. The Bold and the Beautiful can be watched weekdays on CBS or streamed on Paramount Plus.
