At Forrester, Brooke arrived in the CEO's office, looking for Hope. Ridge hadn't seen Hope. He hadn't seen Steffy, either. Brooke wondered if there was news from the doctor. Ridge replied that it was possible that they could learn that day who the father of Steffy's baby was.
Ridge mentioned that Brooke had known about the situation for longer than he had. Brooke explained that Steffy had wanted to be the one to tell him. Brooke didn't want tension between her and Ridge, especially not about the children. He said it wouldn't happen again.
Brooke had thought their kids had been in a good place. She didn't want to point fingers, but she wished that Liam and Steffy hadn't spent the night together. Brooke couldn't deny that Liam had made a terrible mistake. Ridge added that Thomas felt bad about his role in it, too.
Brooke reasoned that Thomas had had a brain injury. Thomas hadn't been in his right mind and hadn't known Liam had even been there. She added that her daughter had been patient and forgiving. Ridge asked if Hope understood that it had been just one night. "One night that could have a lifetime of consequences," Brooke reasoned.
Ridge was sure Finn and Steffy were discussing those consequences. Brooke wasn't discounting Finn and Steffy's predicament, but Brooke wanted to know why it had even happened. "Because Liam, once again, felt the need to be loved by somebody," Ridge replied. Quietly, Ridge added that Liam had made a mistake.
Brooke suggested that Ridge call his daughter, but Ridge figured Steffy would reach out when she knew something. Brooke merely wanted her daughter to be prepared. He felt that they all needed to be prepared. It could be a trying time for all of them. Ridge knew that Brooke was concerned about Hope, but his concern had to be with Steffy and the child she was carrying.
Brooke conveyed that everyone wanted what was best for the baby, including Hope, who didn't want to think negatively about the pregnancy. Brooke didn't, either. Ridge loved Brooke for that. Brooke also didn't want to pretend that it was an ideal situation. He didn't think they needed to do that, and he suggested that they show the kids that a complicated situation didn't have to end badly. Brooke asked how they'd do that after all the problems it had already caused.
Ridge figured it hadn't caused any for him and Brooke. He assumed they were on the same page. Speaking for herself and him, Brooke said they wanted the baby to be Finn's. Ridge added that they wanted their children's relationships to survive.
Agreeing, Brooke stated that it was important for their kids and grandkids that the two relationships survived. Brooke's problem with it was that it hadn't been fair to Hope at all. Hope had been an ideal mother and a devoted wife. Hope had finally gotten all she'd wanted, and Brooke prayed that the paternity test results didn't take it all away from Hope.
At the cliff house, Steffy was with Finn. He thought she was concerned about Kelly, whom Amelia had taken on a playdate. Steffy was actually thinking about the paternity test. Enough time had passed for her to feel as if they should be getting an answer soon. She couldn't help but wonder what their time together would be like if they weren't stuck in limbo.
Finn assured Steffy that it wouldn't be much longer. She thought that he was amazing and said no one would blame him for walking away. Finn replied that they'd been through challenges before. She was like no one he'd ever met, and there was no way he'd walk away from her.
Steffy wished she and Finn could enjoy that period. He believed that they would. Steffy sensed that the baby was his, but she couldn't be at ease without the test proving it. Finn said he'd be hoping for it right beside her. She didn't get how he was so calm about it and guessed that nothing rattled the ER doctor.
Finn responded that Steffy had rattled him. Steffy added that she'd then turned his life upside down. He believed that they were on the verge of an incredible adventure. He couldn't do anything about the results, but he could be the partner the woman he loved deserved. He could be the responsible adult that "this baby, our baby," would need.
Steffy thought that calling Finn amazing was an understatement. Finn felt that way about her, too. He was happier than he'd ever thought he could be. Even with the uncertainty, he didn't doubt what they could be. She made him want to be the kind of man she could make a life and family with. He wouldn't let one night or error in judgment derail that.
Finn reasoned that it had only been one night. Steffy replied that it was no excuse. He knew it, but he could see how much she regretted it. "Not the pregnancy, not the baby," he clarified. Steffy said she loved being a mom and was looking forward to having another child. Finn added that she regretted letting Liam spend the night and giving in to old feelings.
Steffy replied that she and Liam had gotten swept up into old memories. Glancing at the portrait, Finn figured that they were memories that she still cared a lot about. He believed that she loved him, and the portrait didn't make him question it. He felt that he could make her happier than she'd been in the portrait because he could give her more than beautiful memories. He affirmed that they could have a beautiful life together.
Finn believed that Steffy could move on once she got the paternity results. He didn't think it was wishful thinking. He believed that once they got the results, they could make their future happen. Steffy didn't know how he could manage to reassure her in an emergency. He joked that emergencies were his specialty, but he didn't believe they had an emergency. He sensed that the odds were that they'd be raising their baby with Kelly.
Steffy's phone rang. It was Dr. Campbell calling. She'd gotten an update that the paternity test was being analyzed. She would have the results within the hour and asked if Steffy could be there. Steffy said "we" would be right there.
In Brooke's cabin, Hope worked at the table. Liam entered and offered to be late to work if she didn't have any morning meetings to get to. Hope didn't think he needed to do that. He explained that he'd thought they'd go get breakfast together, or he could cook. Trying to gauge the meaning of her expression, he decided that he should stop trying so hard.
Hope said she knew that Liam was sorry and was trying his best, but until the paternity test results were in, there was just too much they didn't know yet. Liam replied that she didn't want him to keep apologizing. "I really don't," she responded. He said she had a wall to protect herself, but he wanted her to talk to him and tell him how she was feeling. Talking might be the only way to overcome what he'd done.
Hope conveyed that she was afraid that the life she and Liam had worked hard to rebuild was falling apart. Liam advised her not to shut down. He'd done it when they'd lost Beth, and he'd promised himself that he'd never do it again. Laughing, Hope wondered how many times she and Liam had said "never again" to each other.
Shaking it off, Hope decided to keep opening up. She was heartbroken for them, for their kids, and for those who'd supported them through tough times and had cheered them on in the good ones. She stated that they should have enough beautiful moments to get her through. "But Liam, this just -- it feels different," Hope concluded. That time felt deliberate and senseless.
Hope noted that Liam had said she was trying to protect herself. Hope wished she could have protected herself sooner; however, it had come from nowhere, and no matter how much Liam and Hope had loved each other, it had still happened. She didn't know how to make peace with that or the possibility that a baby had derived from it. She asked him to be honest with himself and say whether he wanted the baby to be his.
Surprised, Liam wondered how Hope could even ask him that. Hope said she knew him and that he loved Steffy and Kelly. Hope knew his history with Steffy and that he wouldn't have just wound up in bed with her "otherwise." Liam contended that it didn't mean he wanted the child to be his. Hope asked if he did or not.
Liam replied that the answer was a "clear no." He insisted that the life he wanted was with Hope, Beth, and Douglas. Liam believed that he was where he belonged. He wanted the baby to be happy, healthy, and cared for, but he prayed that Finn was the father.
Liam wanted Friday night television and Saturday morning breakfast with Hope and the kids. He wanted it to be the way it had been before he'd screwed it up. Hope replied that they couldn't return to normal, especially not if he had another child with Steffy.
"I don't know what to tell you. I know how I feel having one child with Steffy. I don't see how this would change that," Liam replied. He believed that they could make it, no matter what the result was, but he felt it was his job to make Hope feel that way, too.
Just then, Liam received a call from Steffy. She asked if Hope and Liam would meet at the hospital within the hour to get the test result. He agreed to it. After the call, Hope was anxious to leave, but Liam had more to say to her first.
Liam stated that the results would complicate things, but they wouldn't change his commitment to their family or the life he wanted with Hope. Hope said Liam had already made a commitment to her, and if he'd been so sure about them, he never would have believed she'd be kissing Thomas. Hope explained that he'd vowed not only to be faithful but to also have faith in her, their relationship, and family.
Hope said she was sorry. She didn't want to cause Liam more anguish, and she knew he'd take it all back if he could. He agreed that he would. He'd gone over it in his head a thousand times. He reasoned that he'd been getting anxious about Thomas and had seen her getting closer to him. Liam had felt as if he hadn't been getting through to her.
Something had shattered within Liam when he'd been at Thomas' door, watching and listening. Liam had lost touch with reality, and he'd been in a fog. It had made him into a fool, and he'd reacted in the worst possible way. Liam wanted Steffy's baby to have a happy life, but he didn't want it to get between him and Hope. He asked Hope to give him a chance to earn his way back to her.
