B&B exec explains method behind character airtime madness

The Bold and the Beautiful's Bradley Bell dishes on how the Spectra family has impacted how often you'll be seeing your favorite characters.

The grand return of The Bold and the Beautiful's Spectra family has been one for the books. The entertaining clan has given the Los Angeles scene a jolt of life-giving electricity and colored the fashion-oriented soap opera with more than just bursts of fiery red-hued hair. The only drawback: the blast-from-the-past arrival of the former 80s family has seemingly caused other characters' screen time to dwindle.

In recent weeks, fans have been dismayed to learn that Linsey Godfrey (Caroline Spencer) was reportedly dropped to recurring status with the 30-year-old soap and the Avant family has seemingly taken a backseat on the canvas. So, what gives?

B&B's head writer and executive producer, Bradley Bell, hinted to Soap Opera Digest that taking Caroline out of the spotlight was less about making room for the Spectra family and more about lessening Thomas' (Pierson Fod) baby daddy status. However, he teases that fans haven't seen the last of Caroline, who will definitely be back at some point due to the bond she shares with Ridge's son.

Meanwhile, the daytime writer says that the arrival of the Spectra family is actually going to be a great thing for Maya (Karla Mosley), Nicole (Reign Edwards), and the rest of the Avants.

"The Spectra family is actually going to be good for the Avant family because there are going to be some interesting crossovers," Bell teases.

It's not exactly clear if he means crossovers with B&B's sister soap, The Young and the Restless, or if he means the canvas will be shaken up so that characters who don't normally interact with each other cross paths. Either way, it looks like fans won't want to miss what's coming up in the weeks ahead.

What do you think about Caroline taking a backseat on B&B? What kind of crossover situation would you love to see play out on the CBS soap? How much are you enjoying Spectra 2.0?
