The Bold and the Beautiful executive producer Bradley Bell opens up about the controversy surrounding transgender issues and what his father, the late William J. Bell, would think of the Emmy-winning Maya story.
CBS Daytime's The Bold and the Beautiful had the whole world talking when it introduced its storyline involving a transgender woman last year, and the groundbreaking Maya storyline portrayed by actress Karla Mosley landed the soap opera its fourth Daytime Emmy Award in the Outstanding Writing Team category.
Moments after receiving the golden statue, the show's executive producer and head writer explained in the press room that though the story rightly received a lot of buzz, its concept was actually quite simple. "It's a story about acceptance and love. It's a love story," he pointed out. "And if you can find love in this world in any shape or form, it's a good thing. We don't need to overanalyze it. I think we spend too much time thinking about what's right and what's wrong and which bathroom to go into. It's ridiculous! We need to just live the best life we can live and love one another, and that's what it's all about."
As for what his father, the late William J. Bell (creator of both B&B and The Young and the Restless), would think of the Maya/Myron story, Bell enthused he's sure his dad would be proud. "Oh, he'd like it! I think he'd really like it," the exec said. "He loved trying to stay up with the times and loved a love story. And this is nothing but a love story, and I think that's the message -- more than any other message -- that love is love, and just celebrate it when you have it, because it can be very fleeting."
