Eddie, Margo, and Ben arrived home to find Hal sitting on the couch, waiting for them. Carly begged Jack to return to her, and they almost made love.

Lucinda introduced Brad as her new "friend," and Sam was stunned when Brad kissed Lucy. Margo was stunned when Tom told her that Emily claimed that she had changed her story only to protect Margo. Margo continued to deny that Eddie had mugged Emily. John stunned Jack when he told him all about Carly's plans to have him and the 50 million dollars. Margo sadly told Eddie that it would be better if he no longer stopped by the house. Later she asked Andy to be a friend to Eddie; Andy did not want to befriend Eddie at all. However, later at an A.A. meeting, Andy was shocked to hear Susan's confession to the group. Carly was stunned when Jack told her that he didn't want to see her ever again. Eddie told Susan that Emily had framed him because he knew that she wanted Tom. When they discovered that the paper would be awarded a journalism award, Emily made plans to go to New York with Tom. Unknown to Tom, she arranged that they would only have one room at the hotel. Carly sped away from the park and hit Julia with her car.
July 20 to 24, 1998
Carly discovered that her car had hit Julia and tried to get help. After doing emergency surgery, Ben was suspended. Brad stood before Lucinda in the buff. Jack took in Brad for questioning, but had to let him go. Jack swore that Brad would not get away with it again like he had when he killed their father. Emily told her mother that the next time she needed to "get it off her chest," she should take a drink instead. Sam provided a place on the Valetta for Georgia to stay. James was surprised to find David alive but shocked to learn that not only had he kidnapped Julia and Carly, but he had also arranged the Valetta disaster. David went to his memorial service and listened while a heartbroken Molly opened her heart. Seeing him, Molly fainted, but no one would believe she had seen David. Emily conned the reporter to take the videotape of Margo and Eddie to their competition. The video was aired over the news. Adam saw the video and moved in with Hal. Sam and Kirk went on a picnic by the river and disappeared. Georgia thought that Sam had run out on her again. Eddie comforted her and promised that he would not leave her.

When James took a syringe to inject David so he could take him aboard his plane and get him out of the country, Carly unknowing gave him away, and David injected James instead. Georgia left the hospital without permission, and everyone was worried. She visited Lucinda and begged to know where Sam was. Lucinda didn't believe that Georgia knew Sam or that Sam wanted to pay for Georgia's medical bills. When Emily learned that Margo was going out of town on family business, she told Eddie that Margo was leaving Tom and the boys and running away. Then Emily called the news people and told them that Margo was running away with Eddie. Eddie arrived at Margo's with his bags to tell her that he would leave instead of her, just as the news media arrived and began asking questions and taking pictures. Eddie asked Brad for a job.

SEPTEMBER 1998
September 7 to 11, 1998
David kidnapped Lily, Julia, Carly, and James. In a remote cabin, Lily gave birth to a daughter who had difficulty breathing. Molly told Jack and Holden that she had seen David at his memorial service and that later he had called her. Jack was able to find the car and rescue Carly and James from the trunk -- just in the nick of time -- but he had no idea where Lily and Julia were. Later, Lucinda learned that Georgia was Sam's daughter.
September 14 to 18, 1998
Julia discovered that David was planning to raise Lily's baby as his own so she did her best to protect Lily. When David was convinced that the baby needed to breast-feed to survive, David gave the baby up for just long enough for Julia to sneak Lily and the baby out of the cabin. James and Lucinda joined forces to find their children. Holden learned from the hospital that if Lily didn't have the baby by the time they were going to do the induction, there might be a problem. Holden fought Lucinda and James's plan to work together. James got an idea of where David could be. Margo had a blood test and found out that she was pregnant. While Margo was talking to Susan on the telephone, Emily listened in and learned the news. She called the TV station with a tip that "Detective Love" was pregnant with Eddie Silva's baby. She then made an appointment for Margo at an abortion clinic and sent the packet to Margo. Eddie had a serious discussion with Adam, after which Adam went home. Margo's half-sister moved in with the Hugheses.

David made his demands of Holden. Julia was to carry the ransom money. James and Lucinda supported each other but they got locked in the cellar at the farm. Emily found out that Margo was pregnant, and she had plans of her own. Going to a private family party, Emily did everything she could to get Tom to learn that Margo had an appointment with the abortion clinic. When Tom did learn about the abortion, he wouldn't believe Margo knew nothing about it. They had a terrible fight, and Tom left the house and went straight to Emily. Camille wanted to be intimate with Ben, but he wanted to wait until they were married; this made Camille afraid that he couldn't face her after the surgery. John returned from vacation, and Barbara overheard him confess to Lisa what he felt for her; she ran straight to Hal. Hal was cold to Carly; when the baby moved and she tried to get him to feel it, he accused her of using the baby to her own advantage.
September 28 to October 2, 1998
Jack, Holden, and Julia arrived at the drop-off site. Jack got into position and shot out David's tire so that he had to walk to the drop-off site. Jack found the baby in the car. At the drop-off site, Holden and David got in a scuffle after David confessed to killing Lily and the baby and tossing their bodies into the river. David was shot and died after he had warned Holden that when his father found out what happened, he would kill the baby, Lily, Emma, and everyone Holden loved. Holden and Julia buried David and told the police that he had escaped. Lily got free and ran into the forest, where she immediately got lost. While resting, she was bitten by a spider. Tom slept with Emily but had regrets; however, Emily was sure of herself and didn't recognize Tom's regrets. She bragged to her mother that she had slept with Tom. Tom was devastated when he returned home and found out that Margo had miscarried the baby. They were able to make up and try to put the marriage back together. Camille began to lose her hair. Molly accidentally spent one of the bills from the ransom money, alerting the officials. Barbara and Hal arrived at the same hotel. Hal found out from Molly that Carly and John would marry, so he faxed a refusal to Carly. Carly wanted to go to the island to talk to Hal, but John said it could be dangerous for the baby. Sara Ruth warned Ben that he would lose Camille if he didn't keep her away from Brad. While Eddie and Katie were at Java, a woman lost a fifty-dollar bill and complained to the manager that she had been robbed. The manager accused Eddie. Georgia was hurt to find that Eddie had been lying to her about being a college student. Margo overheard Andy say that Emily had made up the mugging but he couldn't tell her any more because of A.A. Margo blasted Andy. Emily ended up telling Tom that she had lied. Andy later got a "dear John" letter from Nikki, and he started drinking again.

Carly confided in her cousin Molly that she was going to see a doctor in Groverton to see if he would induce her labor early. She was angry when the doctor told her it was against the law for him to do so, and she decided instead to sneak into Lisa's apartment and hide a video camera in hopes of capturing John Dixon in a compromising position with Lisa. Later, the camera recorded John giving Lisa a warm embrace. Emily was heartbroken that Tom decided to move back with Margo, at least for Christmas, and she continued to try to talk to him on the phone. Meanwhile, Andy struggled with his alcoholism and a breakup with Nikki. Jack and Brad were surprised when their mother, Delores, showed up unannounced and expected them to act like brothers and take her to dinner. Later Delores talked by phone to her husband, Frank, and she begged him not to sue for divorce. Julia overheard the whole conversation.

Camille told Ben that she had slept with Brad and she loved him. Ben buried himself in work. Tom and Margo got closer. Emily couldn't make anyone believe that she was being stalked. Molly talked Andy into going to church. Later he said that that it had been exactly what he had needed. Lucinda pressed James for the half million dollars he had promised to give her. Hope became ill again. Carly decided she wanted her baby no matter when it was born, and she turned to Jack for help.
