As the hottest new anime, Solo Leveling delivers an exciting view of a world plagued by monsters coming from interdimensional gates. Humanity’s only protectors in this situation are the hunters - individuals blessed with superpowers. The protagonist, Sung Jinwoo, once the weakest hunter in the world, gains a mysterious system allowing him to level up.
Through this, he rapidly accumulated strength and became the central figure in the turbulent nation of Korea. Throughout Jinwoo’s journey, several intriguing characters are introduced to aid his journey. Beru is among the most beloved, captivating fans with his personality and powers.

The origin of Beru’s identity comes in Solo Leveling's Jeju Island Arc, where Korean and Japanese Hunters faced monstrous ants. Right when an expedition to kill the Ant Queen seemed successful, the introduction of the intimidating Ant King took everyone by surprise. With the death of hunters such as Goto Ryuji and Min Byung-Gyu, defeat seemed imminent.
At this point, Sung Jinwoo joined the battle and displayed his shadow powers to the entire world. He delivered a brutal beating to the Ant King, extinguishing his presence permanently. At the end of the chaos, Jinwoo extracted the Ant King’s shadow to add to his army.
Given the name "Beru", he immediately became the second most important soldier of Jinwoo after Igris. Though the Ant King was driven by his desire for bloodlust and strength, Beru is significantly different.

Beru - Sung Jinwoo’s Most Loyal Soldier in Solo Leveling
Beru is Sung Jinwoo’s most dedicated soldier, obediently obeying every command of his master. As a testament to this, he mainly refers to Jinwoo as “my liege” or “my king”. As a shadow, Beru tends to provide comic relief as parts of his personality are built upon his obsession with Korean dramas. He has Jinwoo’s complete trust and is assigned to watch over his sister, Jinah.
At the same time, he is still a highly dangerous fighter. Beru’s strength, speed, and durability far surpass S-Rank Hunters, while he is one of the few shadows capable of thought and speech. His main skill, Gluttony, can absorb the knowledge and skills of everyone he consumes. Additionally, Beru is a master healer and can save those inflicted with fatal injuries.
Most importantly, as Jinwoo’s shadow, his master’s growth helps his own growth. Save for Bellion, Beru is Jinwoo’s strongest soldier in Solo Leveling, evenly matched with Igris.
His skills are mainly highlighted during the final battle against the Monarchs, where he took part in the struggle against the Monarch of Plagues, the Beast Monarch, and the Frost Monarch. Following Jinwoo’s victory against these antagonists, Beru continued his role, healing Thomas Andre and helping him defeat Tarnak.

After Jinwoo resets the timeline, Beru helps the protagonist fight the Monarchs and Antares yet again. He ensured the new world was no longer threatened by monsters and dungeons, helping Jinwoo live his ideal life.
With the birth of Jinwoo and Hae-In’s son, Sung Suho, Beru was assigned as his caretaker. He played with and protected Suho until the introduction of Solo Leveling: Ragnarok’s antagonists, the Itarim. Hence, in the sequel, Beru’s primary role is that of a guide to Suho, conveying the absent Sung Jinwoo’s will and ensuring the new successor of the Shadow Monarch fits his role.
To conclude, Beru is not just yet another side character in Solo Leveling but is a symbol of Jinwoo’s leadership and the loyalty he inspires. Despite formerly being the villainous Ant King, he has won fans over with his moments of hilarity and prowess in battle. Since Solo Leveling Season 2 ended with Jinwoo resurrecting Beru, fans have much to look forward to in the coming seasons.
