With the One Piece television anime series’ Egghead Arc having returned, manga-readers and anime-only fans alike are excited for the coming focus some characters will get. One of the most important of these characters in the context of the arc’s events is none other than Jewelry Bonney.

Jewelry Bonney is best known as a member of both the Eleven Supernovas and the larger Worst Generation group, which the Supernovas are a part of. More notably, however, she’s also the daughter of Bartholomew Kuma, which was revealed in the first half of the Egghead Arc. Bonney is also a captain of her own crew, fittingly called the Bonney Pirates.

Her bounty upon her introduction was initially 140 million Beri, but was raised to 320 million Beri after the timeskip. While Bonney appears to be in her early 20s when she first debuts, it’s eventually revealed that she’s actually just a little girl. In her first pre-timeskip appearance, she’s only 10 years old, and is now 12 at the time of One Piece’s Egghead Arc.

While Bonney is known as and accepted to be Kuma’s daughter, the two aren’t related. Kuma is instead her adoptive father, having been in love with Bonney’s birth mother, Ginny, whom he knew from a young age. When Ginny died, Kuma took it upon himself to watch over Bonney and treat the young girl as if she were his own.

As of this article’s writing, Bonney’s biological father has yet to be officially named or introduced in One Piece, given the currently available information. What is known about Bonney’s biological father is that he was a Celestial Dragon who had wed seven women before Ginny. While there are some theories on who her father could be, nothing has been confirmed thus far.

Bonney’s Devil Fruit in One Piece

When Bonney was still an infant, Gorosei member Saint Jaygarcia Saturn performed an experiment on her. The experiment was to see if a Devil Fruit could be given to an infant via an extract of the Fruit itself. Bonney was the infant tested, and the experiment was a success, giving Bonney the Toshi Toshi no Mi, or Age-Age Fruit.

Upon its initial introduction in One Piece, the Paramecia-type Age-Age Fruit is said to allow its user to manipulate the aging process of anything they wish. This includes themselves, other people, animals, and even objects. The years the user steals from these people intriguingly manifest in the form of sparkling jewelry and gemstones.

This can obviously be used in many ways, such as but not limited to disguising oneself, crippling opponents by aging them very old or young, gaining access to sealed areas, and more. People and animals affected by the Fruit retain their memories and cognitive abilities. What the Fruit can’t affect is injuries like scars, bodily modifications, or diseases.

However, the Fruit’s true strength is that the user can transform the above targets into any future form that the user envisions as possible. With enough imagination, the bodies of targets can transform into different shapes, sizes, races, or even Devil Fruit types. As a child, Bonney is able to utilize this aspect to its fullest potential, given her likewise highly imaginative mind.

The main weakness of the Fruit’s ability in One Piece is that its effects are only temporary. The Fruit’s use also narrows as its user becomes more aware of reality and what is or isn’t possible. This can likewise be manipulated by enemies to psychologically attack the user and neuter their Fruit’s power accordingly. It also suffers from the typical Devil Fruit weaknesses.

In summation

Jewelry Bonney is a significant character in One Piece, especially in the events of the Egghead Arc. She’s not only a Supernova and Worst Generation member, but also the adoptive daughter of ex-Revolutionary and Shichibukai, Bartholomew Kuma. Her Paramecia-type Age-Age Fruit is uniquely powerful, offering abilities arguably matched only by Luffy’s Fruit in his Gear 5 form.
