The expansive world of One Piece is filled with intriguing characters who had been foreshadowed for years before being revealed. The most recent in this list of highly anticipated individuals is Figarland Shamrock, finally appearing and causing unparalleled chaos during the Elbaph Arc.

Figarland Shamrock is Shanks’ older twin brother and the commander of the God’s Knights - the elite guard protecting Sacred Mary Geoise. He is a World Noble himself and the son of Saint Figarland Garling. Unlike Shanks, who separated from his family at a young age and was raised by the Roger Pirates, Shamrock was brought up among the Celestial Dragons.

As a result, his philosophy is much like the other World Nobles in One Piece. He looks down on the common populace, displaying disdain towards Shanks’ adventures in the “lower world”. Shamrock is very ruthless and conniving, willing to go to any lengths in order to achieve his goal.

While he has shown to be more patient and understanding compared to other World Nobles, this also only goes up to an extent. When facing blatant disrespect, Shamrock does not hesitate to kill his enemies, a trait that is noticeably different from Shanks's. He has a sadistic side but is well-respected by his fellow Celestial Dragons.

Shamrock made his first official appearance in the Elbaph Arc of One Piece, centering around the Straw Hats’ adventures in the land of the Giants. While Luffy and his crew were exploring the vast landscape, this God’s Knight and his subordinate Gunko snuck into the island through a Magic Circle. They had aimed to meet Loki in the underworld and recruit him into the God’s Knights.

This mission was led by Shamrock for two primary reasons - Loki’s infamous strength and his standing as the prince of Elbaph. By convincing him to join their group, the World Government's strength would increase, and they could also bring Elbaph under their wing. However, Loki disrespectfully turned Shamrock down, causing Shanks’ twin to be highly annoyed.

He decided to take another approach and brutally attacked Loki with his Cerberus sword, a weapon that had been fed an Awakened Mythical Zoan-type Devil Fruit. This was the first and only display of Shamrock’s powers in One Piece so far, but it was impactful enough to make fans acknowledge the God’s Knights’ abilities.

Following this, Shamrock also showcased his high intellect by immediately coming up with another plan to conquer Elbaph. He decided to kidnap the Giants’ children and use them as bargaining chips, consequently causing chaos on the island.

For its sake, Saint Killingham and Saint Sommers of the God’s Knights were summoned. Shamrock proposed a twisted game of kidnapping the children using his subordinates’ Devil Fruit powers, but left the scene after being called back to Mary Geoise.

Hence, within the span of a few chapters, Shamrock has already stolen the show with his personality, powers, and cunning. He commands loyalty from those around him and instills fear within his enemies.

Foreshadowing of Shamrock’s Existence in One Piece

Shamrock’s reveal was not a surprise but rather put years of fan theories to rest. He had been commonly known as “Shanks’ Evil Twin”, first seen having a discussion with the Gorosei during the Levely.

While his identity had not been confirmed then, fans found it unusual for the captain of the Red-Haired Pirates to be subservient to the World Government. Hence, the only inference that could be made was that Shanks had a brother or a clone.

This was later supported by many more clues. In One Piece Film: Red, the Gorosei referred to Uta with the Figarland surname when believing her to be Shanks’ daughter. This established the relationship between Shanks and the World Nobles.

Finally, Saint Figarland Garling was the champion of God Valley and hinted at having multiple children during his outings. Given how Shanks was found by Roger after the God Valley Incident, it was natural to assume that his other child remained in Garling’s care.

To conclude, Figarland Shamrock is the biggest testament to Oda’s masterful character development, which often begins even before a character is formally introduced. By sprinkling clues across the storyline, he made fans fit the pieces of the puzzle known as Shamrock before ultimately revealing his menacing existence in Elbaph.

Unlike the kind-hearted Shanks, Shamrock is the exact opposite, earning the ire of the fandom for his actions. While going deeper into the series, the common expectation will be to see the fated reunion between the twins.
