One of the most popular characters from mangaka Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece series is the Three Sword Style swordsman, Roronoa Zoro. Over more than 25 years and 1100 chapters later, he has to be one of the series’ strongest characters on his journey. Likewise, with how many swords he has gone through and the abilities he’s unlocked, it can get confusing to keep track.
For starters, his current swords include the Wado Ichimonji, the Sandai Kitetsu, and Enma. The Wado Ichimonji is a Great Grade Blade he inherited from his childhood friend and rival, Kuina, after her death. The Sandai Kitetsu is a Graded Blade that he bought in Loguetown. The Great Grade Blade Enma was acquired during the Wano Arc and once belonged to Kozuki Oden.
While Zoro is best known as One Piece’s iconic Three Sword Style innovator, Zoro also often uses One and Two Sword Style. He also utilizes Kin’emon’s Foxfire Style and his own Nine Sword Style when using his Ashura techniques. In all styles, Zoro’s incredible strength and immense speed are on display, which are earned through his dedicated training regiment in One Piece.

He also has equally impressive durability and endurance, evidencing his sacrifice for Luffy on Thriller Bark. His incredibly shrewd and observational nature in battle gives him tactical skills that balance out his lack of foresight and planning. Likewise, these qualities essentially allow him to come up with on-the-spot plans that work out, such as against Pica in Dressrosa.
It also goes without saying that Zoro is an incredibly skilled swordsman. Even as a rookie, or “frog in the well” (as Dracule Mihawk put it), he was able to impress the then-Shichibukai despite losing in grand fashion. His skills were further established when Mihawk agreed to train Zoro during One Piece’s two-year timeskip, which heightened his swordsmanship even further.
Zoro’s Haki in One Piece
Zoro’s training with Mihawk during the timeskip is also where he learnt Armament Haki, mastering both the hardening and imbuement aspects. Zoro’s skill with Armament Haki was further proven during the Wano Arc as he tried to master Enma. Despite the blade stealing all of his Armament Haki, or “Ryou,” he was able to reclaim it and eventually control the blade.
One Piece’s Wano Arc is also where Zoro awoke both his standard Conqueror’s Haki and its Advanced version. While it first appeared during his fight with Kaido, it fully awoke during his fight against King. There, he emanated his Conqueror’s Haki in a blast, evidenced by knocking out the Beast Pirates fodder. He then imbued all three swords with Conqueror’s Haki.

The awakening of his Advanced Conqueror’s Haki gave birth to his King of Hell Three Sword Style. This is effectively a blend of both his Advanced Conqueror’s Haki and Armament Haki, imbuing both into all three of his swords. While the form is incredibly powerful, it can’t be maintained for long since its use inherently requires Enma to freely drain his Haki.
Zoro has also been shown to be able to use Observation Haki, with his first confirmed use of it coming in the Fish-Man Island Arc. However, the extent of his skill with Observation Haki has yet to be explored. It’s also unconfirmed whether or not Mihawk trained him in Observation Haki as well as Armament Haki, or if he learned it on his own.
In summation
One Piece’s Roronoa Zoro is an incredibly powerful and skilled swordsman who pioneered his own iconic Three Sword Style. He’s also able to use all three forms of Haki, including Advanced Conqueror’s Haki. Zoro’s swords are also some of the highest quality in the entire series. All of this combines with his incredible physical gifts and abilities to make him extremely powerful.
