Throughout One Piece’s Elbaph Arc thus far, one of the most central and important characters has been King Harald. Despite having been dead for many years as of the arc’s start, his influence on Elbaph’s culture and policies is shaping the arc’s narrative. Likewise, many fans have been trying to find out the reasons why Harald made such drastic changes to Elbaph.

At first, fans thought Harald was making these decisions due to secretly working with the World Government. By steering Elbaph towards a peaceful existence and away from its warrior-esque roots, the island would be weakened enough to give in to the World Government. Whether by being forced to join them for safety or by being invaded, the end result would be the same.

However, the latest One Piece spoilers for chapter 1146 have suggested that this may not be the case. Earlier in the arc, it was established that the Holy Knights had some sort of connection with King Harald via Saint Shepherd Sommers’s words. He specifically commented on Harald’s grave, asking Figarland Shamrock if he was in Elbaph to visit it.

Now, once again, Sommers’ words have further recontextualized the apparent relationship King Harald once had with the World Government. Based on Sommers’ recent words, it seems that the late king may not have been as closely allied with the World Government as fans thought. In turn, this completely changes fans’ previous perception of Elbaph’s ex-ruler.

Harald may have been sabotaging the World Government all along in One Piece

Per the latest spoilers, One Piece chapter 1146 ends with Sommers defeating Jaguar D. Saul in combat near the Walrus Academy school. After earning victory, Sommers comments on the presence of schools and libraries in Elbaph. He comments that the Giants are supposed to be warriors and the World Government’s “mercenaries,” cursing Harald for “messing up this bad.”

Sommers’s clear criticism of Harald for implementing such peaceful policies and ways of life in Elbaph is in direct conflict with fans’ previous perceptions. Whereas fans thought Harald was weakening Elbaph for the World Government, Sommers’s words dispute this. Furthermore, Sommers’ words imply that Harald’s assigned objective was the exact opposite of his actions.

Sommers’s comments about the Giants being warriors who should’ve been the World Government’s mercenaries also match Gunko’s words earlier on. She’s seen discussing a coming “immense war,” and implies that the World Government’s goal is to get Elbaph’s Giants on their side for it.

In turn, One Piece’s World Government likely instructed Harald to ensure that Elbaph’s warriors were ready when the time came. Realizing the fate that would await them if they stayed who they were, Harald seemingly chose to fake his cooperation while actually sabotaging these plans. This also explains his push for peace and the actions he took to further this change.

Of course, this apparent conclusion also goes against fans’ previous perception of Harald and his actions as mentioned above. Rather than being an enemy to Elbaph and its ways, Harald seemingly tried to steer his subjects away from tradition in order to avoid the future laid out for them.

Without a doubt, Sommers’ latest words completely change how fans perceive the character of King Harald. While it doesn’t confirm exactly what Harald’s deal with the World Government was, it heavily implies these details to the point of all but confirming them. Fans can expect this new plot point to be elaborated on in the coming weeks and issues beyond chapter 1146.
