One Piece has no shortage of captivating characters, but very few measure up to the great Monkey D. Garp. As Dragon’s father, Luffy’s grandfather, and Ace’s adoptive grandfather, Garp has been a towering figure in the One Piece narrative and lore. He is known as the “Hero of the Marines” due to his contributions during the God Valley Incident and is a Vice Admiral who could become an Admiral at any time.

However, despite all his achievements and fabled strength, Garp faced a difficult situation against the Blackbeard Pirates during the Egghead Arc. As a result, many fans, particularly anime-only watchers, fear his fate in the series. Thankfully, Garp is not dead in One Piece, though he is currently in a dire predicament.

To understand Garp’s fate, it is crucial to know of the events leading up to his clash against the Blackbeard Pirates. Garp is the mentor of Koby, Luffy’s friend, and a rising star in the Marines. During the Egghead Arc, Koby had willingly become a hostage of the Blackbeard Pirates in exchange for 800 Marines who were in their clutches.

Due to Koby’s worth, Blackbeard had intended to use him as leverage to make Hachinosu his own kingdom. However, this wouldn’t have been possible since Koby was a member of SWORD, an independent unit of the Marines with no official ties to the World Government. Nevertheless, Blackbeard still counted on Koby’s reputation to serve as an advantage.

He turned out to be right, as Garp, who saw Koby as his protégé and a promising new Marine, headed out to save him. Although the Marines were restricted from moving against an Emperor, Garp went to Hachinosu along with SWORD. While Blackbeard was away from the island fighting Law’s crew, Garp began his effort to save Koby.

The Vice Admiral delivered a powerful Galaxy Impact on the island, which caused his opponents to despair. At this point, he faced Kuzan, his former student, and other members of the Blackbeard Pirates. While Garp impressed fans with his dominant powers, he struggled against his overwhelming odds. As he tried protecting Koby, Garp was stabbed by Shiryu and continued his exhausting battle against Kuzan.

Nevertheless, by the end of their confrontation, Garp served as a valuable distraction, allowing Koby and the rest of the Marines to escape Hachinosu. Koby also valiantly demonstrated his growth by destroying the structure controlled by Pizarro. As the Marines celebrated Koby's actions and expected the Vice Admiral to rejoin them, Garp instructed them to leave him behind and move forward as the future of the Navy.

Fans were then shocked to see Garp lying on the ground, pierced by Kuzan’s ice. Though he was laughing, he was gravely injured and surrounded by the Blackbeard Pirates. This was the last time anime watchers saw him, while manga fans also did not hear news about him for a long time.

Garp’s fate in One Piece

However, as mentioned earlier, Garp is still alive in One Piece and his status was confirmed during the Elbaph Arc. In chapter 1126 of the manga, Blackbeard praised Kuzan for capturing Garp, who was imprisoned by his crew. Kuzan replied that he had intended to kill him but only managed to take him down thanks to the rest of the crew.

Hence, Monkey D. Garp is currently alive in One Piece, though he is chained up and captured by the Blackbeard Pirates, who intend to use him as a bargaining chip. Since fans have gotten a flavor of Garp’s immense powers, they are eager to see him in action when he escapes his predicament.
