The number of members of the Straw Hat Pirates in One Piece is everchanging and often disputed. As of chapter 1145 of the One Piece manga, the Straw Hat pirate crew has 10 members and one ex-member of sorts. This is not to be confused with the Straw Hat Grand Fleet, however, which consists of seven other pirate crews and 5640 members outside of the main Straw Hats.
The members of the Straw Hat pirate crew, in order of joining, are Monkey D. Luffy, Roronoa Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Sanji, Tony Tony Chopper, Nico Robin, Franky, Brook, and Jinbei. Nefertari D. Vivi of Alabasta joined the crew before Chopper but had to leave due to her royal duties during the Alabasta arc, at the end of which Nico Robin joined the Straw Hats.
Many speculate that the crew will not grow further since Luffy initially wanted 10 members. Some believe that Vivi will rejoin the crew, while others hope for characters like Yamato or Bonney to join Luffy’s team.
The One Piece manga, however, is already in the final saga, and thus the possibility of this beloved crew gaining more members grows more and more scant with every chapter.
The members of the Straw Hat Pirates: One Piece’s central characters
The Straw Hat pirate crew stands, or sails, at the center of the One Piece storyline. Their name comes from the infamous, or famous, depending on the person asked, straw hat worn by the captain, Monkey D. Luffy.
Luffy, having eaten what was originally known as the Gomu Gomu no Mi (or the Gum-Gum Fruit) at a young age, is one of the Straw Hats’ four Devil Fruit users. Currently one of the four Emperors of the Sea with a bounty of Three Billion berries, Luffy is the strongest fighter of the crew, although certainly not the smartest.
Luffy is one of the few characters who can use all three types of Haki in their advanced form. His goal is to become the king of the pirates by finding Gol D. Roger’s treasure, the elusive One Piece. Being the captain, Luffy is by default the first member of his crew. The other members he’s collected throughout his journey are detailed below.
Roronoa Zoro (Origin: East Blue, Bounty: 1,111,000,000 Berries): Known as Pirate Hunter Zoro, the Straw Hats’ swordsman was the first person to join Luffy’s ragtag crew back when they had neither the resources nor a ship. Famous for using three swords and infamous for always getting lost, Zoro wants to become the strongest swordsman in the world.
Nami (Origin: East Blue, Bounty: 366,000,000 Berries): Nami is the Straw Hats’ navigator and is in charge of their finances. Some might argue that she should be considered the fifth member to join the crew given that she only formally joined after the Arlong Park arc. Nami dreams of drawing a map of the world. Together with Luffy and Zoro, Nami makes up the colloquially known “Romance Dawn trio”.
Usopp (Origin: East Blue, Bounty: 500,000,000 Berries): Usopp dreams of becoming a brave warrior of the sea and serves as the Sniper in the crew. However, he has also served as the shipwright before Franky joined.
Sanji (Origin: North Blue, Bounty: 1,032,000,00 Berries): Black Leg Sanji is the cook of the Straw Hat Pirates and one of their strongest fighters. A former prince of the Germa kingdom, Sanji wants to find the mythical All Blue, a place where all five oceans of the One Piece world meet.
Tony Tony Chopper (Origin: Grand Line, Bounty: 1,000 Berries): Chopper is an anthropomorphic Reindeer who has eaten the Hito Hito no Mi (Human-human Fruit). He’s the youngest member of the crew and serves as the Straw Hats’ doctor.
Nico Robin (Origin: West Blue, Bounty: 930,000,000 Berries): Robin is the archaeologist of the crew and is one of the only surviving people who can read the Road Poneglyphs. Robin has eaten the Hana Hana no Mi (Flower-Flower Fruit) and wishes to find out the truth of the Void Century.
Franky (Origin: South Blue, Bounty: 394,000,000 Berries): Franky is a cyborg and was the seventh member to join the crew. He serves as the Shipwright and made the Straw Hats’ second (and current) ship, the Thousand Sunny.
Brook (Origin: West Blue, Bounty: 383,000,000 Berries): Brook is the oldest member of the Straw hat crew and serves as their musician. Brook is the fourth and final Devil Fruit user of the crew, having eaten the Yomi Yomi no Mi (Revive-Revive Fruit).
Jinbei (Origin: Grand Line, Bounty: 1,100,000,000 Berries): A former Warlord of the Sea, Jinbei was the last to join the crew. One of the strongest and wisest members of the Straw Hat Pirates, Jinbei is a whale shark fish-man and serves as the helmsman.

The Straw Hat Pirates are currently at Elbaph Island in the One Piece manga and in Egghead Island in the anime. Although close to their goals, they do have a fair bit of the way left to traverse to their final destination, Laugh Tale, where the One Piece is buried. It remains to be seen whether they pick up another crew member to join them during this journey.
