One of the most integral aspects of One Piece’s narrative is the two-year timeskip the series takes following the events of the Summit War Saga. This timeskip essentially serves as a means of training up the Straw Hat Pirates so they can deal with stronger threats. More specifically, their loss at the Sabaody Archipelago proved they still needed to get stronger.

However, one Straw Hats’ timeskip adventures has additional significance in Brook, where he becomes a global celebrity. This plot point recently returned in the Elbaph Arc, where Holy Knight Gunko was revealed to be a fan of Brook’s. Even more recently, spoilers for chapter 1147 claim that Brook seems to recognize Gunko from somewhere.

While Brook’s words in the latest One Piece spoilers don’t tease how he knows Gunko, fans are confident that the answer lies within his timeskip adventures. More specifically, fans are theorizing that the girl whom Brook meets after landing on Namakura Island. While a seemingly random guess with no evidence, there are some context clues that suggest this could be true.

Some of the most significant include Gunko’s character design, especially when viewed with Brook’s typical gag and obsessions in mind. Although still speculative, there is an argument to be made that Gunko’s true identity is that of this yet-named minor character in mangaka Eiichiro Oda’s series.

Gunko’s relationship with Brook may date back to One Piece’s timeskip events

A key reason why Gunko’s true identity may be the girl Brook met during One Piece’s timeskip has to do with how they met. In typical fashion, Brook immediately goes into his gag of asking the girl if he can see her underwear. Gunko’s design notably lacks any pants, which may be her attempt at appeasing this unique quirk of his, which she already knew of.

Some of Gunko’s recent dialogue is also translated as extremely similar to the chapter title, where Namakura Island is first introduced via Brook’s arrival. When attacking Usopp in chapter 1146, she says, “no one can stop it,” which is eerily similar to chapter 524’s title of “No One Can Stop This Now.” Oda’s penchant for subtle foreshadowing lends further credibility to this relation.

There’s also the fact that Gunko has yet to be officially confirmed as a Celestial Dragon in One Piece. Whereas the other Holy Knights were introduced with “Saint” prefacing their given name and a surname attached, Gunko was introduced as just that. This suggests that she is a normal human rather than a Celestial Dragon, further supporting this as her true identity.

Lastly, Gunko being a fan of Brook’s music also matches with the Namakura Island residents being the driving force behind Brook’s career and popularity. This would also explain why she wants him to become her personal music slave, as she’s part of the group that gave him his career.

However, there are some arguments against this idea. The most significant of them is the fact that the girl Brook meets on Namakura Island doesn’t have two different colored eyes like Gunko does. While this could possibly be explained as an alteration due to some experiment or receiving immortality and regeneration powers from Imu, it’s nevertheless a valid counterpoint.

Final thoughts

While still speculative, it’s certainly plausible given Oda’s penchant for and approach to twists such as these in One Piece. The fact that much of Gunko’s personality and character design is relative to Brook’s own character and personality further supports this theory’s validity. Fans will simply have to wait and see as the Holy Knights and Straw Hats continue to clash.
