My Hero Academia not giving Deku his quirk back was the entire point

In the world of My Hero Academia, Izuku Midoriya was never supposed to have a quirk. When he inherited One for All, it was more like he was borrowing it. Even the creator, Kohei Horikoshi, established Deku as the boy who wanted to become a hero in a world that denied him power. So as I read through the final chapters, I can’t help but think: if Deku never gets One for All quirk back, it might just be the perfect ending to the series.

I know that this is a controversial take. I’ve read the discussions. But think about it, it was never his power to begin with. One for All is an inherited quirk, even if some twist brought his powers back. I agree with the fans who want Deku to end up with a polished version of One For All. It sounds good, nevertheless, that might not be the message My Hero Academia wants to offer.

It’s fascinating to imagine Deku continuing to live quirkless and still be the greatest hero. It was always the core characteristic of Deku to act selflessly. In a society obsessed with powers, he was told over and over again that he’d never be a hero, and yet when he saw his friend Bakugo attacked by a villain, Deku in My Hero Academia jumped right in. He ran towards that villain with no power, no plan, but just pure instincts. His heroism is not defined by One for All but by his heart.

That’s why I believe if he ends up quirkless again by the end, it won’t be tragic. It’ll be poetic. He started with nothing, and still saved the world. That's powerful. In addition, I want to clear the air around the powers of One for All. It was not a gift but a burden. Whomsoever inherited the power had to shoulder the responsibility to fight against All for One.

Every past user in My Hero Academia died young or lived a hard, tragic life. Even All Might, the strongest of them all, was ultimately broken by it. Now, asking Deku, the last user, to retain it seems like a long ask. The powers of Quirk should end with him because he managed to break the cycle and defeat All for One. He freed the world from being taken over by the strongest villain.

Honestly, if the world’s peace is restored, why should he still be held responsible for carrying the burden of power? Now that he has lost his quirk and continues being a hero is a statement to his growth.

Restoring his Quirk in My Hero Academia will take away the impact

As a fan, I have seen him break his bones countless times. He’s taken on the burden of all the past users. He’s faced villain after villain while the world has turned on him, and he has still managed to maintain a smile on his face. And now that Deku is alive after facing the strongest villain, I think it is beautiful.

Even if some twist brought his powers back, it would be satisfying to see him powered up again. But it would send the wrong message. It would say that power is necessary to matter. That you can’t be a hero without a quirk. It would be a completely different message from what My Hero Academia began with.

In conclusion, Deku in My Hero Academia is a hero because of his choices. His empathy and the will to take action while being scared is what made All Might choose him. And now, after the story is over, and if some twist brings his powers back again, it will not send a strong message.

You don’t need to be born special to make a difference. You don’t need to be powerful to be heroic. You just need to care.
