The deuteragonist of Jujutsu Kaisen, Megumi Fushiguro, is a highly divisive figure. Some love him for his active role in the first half of the series, while others are disappointed by the lack of screentime for his character in the final few arcs. This doesn’t come without reason, however, as the fearsome King of Curses took over Megumi’s body in preparation for his final confrontation with Gojo and the rest of the cast.
Due to the high strain Sukuna put his new vessel through, most fans feared Megumi wouldn’t make it out of the series alive. Thankfully, Megumi Fushiguro does not die in Jujutsu Kaisen and gets the happy ending he deserves.
While manga fans may be aware of the big plot twist that led to fears regarding Megumi’s fate, anime-only fans would be unfamiliar. This shocking development occurred during the Culling Game Arc, where Itadori, Megumi, and other allies were aiming to end Kenjaku’s murderous competition and free Gojo from the Prison Realm.

At the same time, Megumi wished to save his sister, Tsumiki, who was caught in the chaos. When attempting to help her exit the Culling Game, Tsumiki shockingly revealed that she was the incarnation of the ancient sorcerer Yorozu. While Megumi was still reeling from the shock, Sukuna took advantage of his secret deal with Itadori. He seized control of the protagonist’s body and forcibly fed Megumi his finger.
By the time Itadori came back to consciousness, he discovered that Sukuna had shifted bodies over to Megumi. The villainous antagonist had displayed an interest in the deuteragonist ever since his first appearance, applauding the Ten Shadows technique and Maharoga’s powers. He finally got the chance to obtain it himself by occupying the user’s vessel.
Sukuna refused to stop there and sought to completely plunge Megumi’s soul into the abyss so he could use his body unrestrained. He killed Yorozu with Megumi’s powers, which led to Tsumiki’s death as well. This drove Megumi into despair. Things went from bad to worse during the Shinjuku Showdown Arc, where Sukuna faced Megumi’s mentor and friends.
When Gojo landed moves such as Unlimited Void on Sukuna, they directly affected Megumi’s soul. This made fans fear for his well-being. It didn’t help that Sukuna effectively killed most of his opponents in this arc as well, further straining Megumi’s mental state. Finally, when the antagonist fully incarnated during the battle against Kashimo, readers were all but convinced Megumi had died.
Fortunately, this wasn’t so. During Itadori’s final stand against Sukuna, he was able to talk with Megumi due to his Domain Expansion. The protagonist understood his friend’s pain better than anyone but shared how he would be lonely if Megumi were to die. This struck a chord with the deuteragonist. When Itadori and Nobara attacked Sukuna’s soul and separated him from Megumi’s body, the antagonist attempted to demoralize his vessel and gain control again.
However, Megumi's spirit had been restored after his conversation with Itadori. He shared how he wouldn’t live a normal life but would dedicate his existence to others. As a result of his rejection, the King of Curses was extinguished.

Megumi’s Final Fate in Jujutsu Kaisen
Megumi Fushiguro’s life in the latter half of Jujutsu Kaisen was filled with tragedy. His body was used by Sukuna to kill his friends, leaving him helpless. However, thanks to Itadori’s efforts, he was eventually freed and contributed to Sukuna’s defeat.
By the end of Jujutsu Kaisen, Megumi reunites with Itadori and Nobara, as the fan-favorite trio goes back to their hilarious and heartfelt bond. He read Gojo’s final letter revealing how the sorcerer had killed his father and laid Tsumiki to rest in her gravesite.

Thus, Megumi’s hardship ended on a happy note, as he returned to completing missions with his friends. He also met Hana and told her that he’d replace her arm, which had been injured by Sukuna. This led to the comedic scene where Hana believed Megumi was proposing. While the pair never officially get together in the series, there is no shortage of fan-fiction stories dedicated to them.
To conclude, Megumi does not die in Jujutsu Kaisen, though fans rightfully feared a tragic end for him. He was helpless in the final battle as Sukuna used his body to kill others but finally regained his spirit thanks to Itadori. Following the antagonist’s death, Megumi gains a greater appreciation for life and begins living it more meaningfully.
