Jujutsu Kaisen: Does Gojo Die?

In Jujutsu Kaisen, Satoru Gojo is said to symbolize invincibility and confidence. He is one of the strongest characters, loved by his friends and feared by his enemies. It did not take long for him to become a fan favorite due to his charismatic presence and unmatched abilities.

However, during the Shinjuku Showdown Arc, after Gojo was stuck in Prison Realm, the question that fans seem to be concerned with is: Does Gojo die in Jujutsu Kaisen? After he escapes from the Prison Realm, he has an intense battle with Sukuna. Unfortunately, Gojo Satoru dies during this battle in Jujutsu Kaisen.

Gojo Satoru was a special-grade jujutsu sorcerer and a teacher at Tokyo Jujutsu High. During his time as a teacher, he mentored Yuji Itadori, Megumi Fushiguro, and Nobara Kugisaki. Everyone relied on him as he was considered to be the strongest sorcerer in modern history.

During the Shibuya Incident Arc, Kenjaku (possessing Geto’s body) orchestrated a plan to trap Gojo in Prison Realm because if they went into battle against him, there was no scenario in which they would possibly win. Therefore, with the help of Mahito and other curses, they team up to corner him.

This plan was the only way to get rid of Gojo, and they successfully trapped him in that cursed object where his body was stuck in suspended time. The direct consequence of this left the world of Jujutsu sorcery in chaos, and with no Gojo to protect the world in Jujutsu Kaisen, curses begin to rise and dominate.

After Gojo returned after escaping from Prison Realm in the Culling Game Arc, fans were reassured that their favorite overpowered character was back in action. The Shinjuku Showdown Arc brings the much-hyped battle between Gojo and Sukuna. Sukuna was the King of Curses who had now taken control over Megumi Fushiguro’s body, and wielding the Ten Shadows Technique, he became Gojo’s ultimate rival.

Gojo casts his Unlimited Void Domain Expansion, while Sukuna counters with his domain, the Malevolent Shrine. Their battle is intense as both of them are extremely strong. Despite Gojo gaining the upper hand for a good part of the fight and injuring Sukuna, the tide eventually turns for the worse.

Sukuna had one more attack called Mahoraga. By using Megumi’s Ten Shadow Technique, he summons Mahoraga and uses its adaptive nature to counter Gojo’s Infinity. With this, he managed to bypass Gojo’s infinite technique and land a fatal blow using a combined slash of Dismantle and Cleave.

Now, because Gojo did not have his ultimate defense, this attack had a catastrophic result as he was bisected, and his body was split cleanly in half. It’s a gruesome and sudden death that leaves readers in stunned disbelief. Readers are then shown a vision where Gojo is reunited with past characters with whom he had strong bonds, like Geto.

The location looks like the afterlife, and Gojo is at peace. He also expresses that he fought with the best of his ability. It's a moment of closure for Gojo but a moment of mourning for fans and the remaining characters.

Why did Gojo die in Jujutsu Kaisen?

Gege Akutami felt that by removing the strongest character in Jujutsu Kaisen, the story would re-establish danger. If Gojo was kept alive, he was seen as a safety net. Just his being around reassured everyone that nothing wrong would happen.

After his death, the possibility of backup is eliminated, and it forces the new generation to push their limits to defeat the enemy. Furthermore, Sukuna defeating Gojo also solidifies his status as the ultimate villain. If someone could defeat the almost invincible being, no one would be safe.

Finally, Gojo’s entire philosophy is centered on empowering the next generation. His whole life, he despised how the Jujutsu world was functioning. Gojo’s death forces characters like Yuji, Yuta, and Maki to grow and step up.
