Jujutsu Kaisen by Gege Akutami has carved its name as one of the best modern shonen anime. With its emotionally driven narrative, sophisticated power system, and vibrant animation, the series ensured that it had a long-lasting effect on the audience. Also, the series has delivered some of the most memorable characters in modern anime, like Gojo Satoru and Toji Fushiguro. But after the ending of the manga, fans are left wondering—what’s next?
The answer to this question might not be as simple as releasing a spinoff series starring the main trio of the show. A sequel could easily thrive without bringing back any of the main characters, and in doing so, it could become even more compelling.
The new part could talk more about the intricacies of cursed techniques or expand more about how the mechanics of jujutsu sorcery actually work in their universe. This might also be a good idea, as fans would get answers about things that were hinted at in the main series but left unexplored.
Jujutsu Kaisen’s biggest strength is its worldbuilding. The idea of curses being born from human emotions makes fans question when it all started. Additionally, they would also reveal why jujutsu sorcerers are tasked with combating them while maintaining their secrecy. While the original story is deeply character-driven, its universe is vast and barely tapped.

A sequel could also be the answer to questions like why there is the existence of different jujutsu schools, are there more foreign cursed users like Miguel from Kenya, and hidden groups who know about the ancient sorcerers who were brought back as a part of Kenjaku's schemes. These separate scenarios can be treated as one part and be explored in depth without mentioning Itadori Yuji or bringing back Gojo from his death.
Perhaps if they wish to go another route, there is an opportunity in elaborating on Jujutsu Kaisen’s meticulously crafted yet deeply mysterious power system. Especially when it comes to Domain Expansion, there are a lot of questions as to why only a few sorcerers can activate it or how the boundaries of domains are determined and whether they can be merged or layered.
A sequel can introduce new characters and make them undergo training or trials to create unique Domain Expansions, and maybe they also manage to uncover lost or forbidden types.
Also, Gege Akutami had hinted at bits of the Heian era and the golden age of jujutsu sorcery but never got to expand on it. So characters like Sukuna, Uro, and Ishigori existed during that period, but the details about it are again skipped.
Maybe a sequel could be a prequel, and it could be set during the Heian era, where entire clans waged wars through cursed spirits and domain clashes. We could see the birth of Domain Expansion or witness the original user of powerful cursed techniques.
Finally, if we take into consideration that Gojo is dead, the world has lost its powerhouse, which means there is room for new ideologies to come. These new perspectives can challenge fans to think more deeply about the nature of the world they’ve grown to love.
Revisiting Old Concepts, Not Old Faces for Jujutsu Kaisen prequel

A major concern when there is news of a sequel to a popular show is its overindulgence in nostalgia. But Jujutsu Kaisen can completely avoid it altogether by not bringing back fan-favorite characters, but it can return to concepts that fans loved. For instance, Toge Inumaki’s cursed speech could evolve into a whole new branch of auditory jujutsu. Or they could explore more about new abilities and characters who were introduced in the Culling Games arc that had majorly confused fans.
Maybe they could mention the known and loved character or give them limited screentime to retain fans. The best part about Jujutsu Kaisen would be that it has a plethora of characters who were severely underexplored and can get their time to shine.
Although it is highly unlikely that Gege Akutami might work on a sequel, as he seems to wish to work on new projects. But if he does choose to do so, Jujutsu Kaisen fans worldwide would love to see what concepts he might cook up. And if done right, the next chapter in the Jujutsu Kaisen universe won’t just be a continuation but rather be seen as an evolution. And that’s what all great sequels aspire to be.
