JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is Hirohiko Araki’s masterpiece and has influenced several generations of fans with its expansive world, exciting storytelling, and fascinating characters. Having begun publication in 1998, the series is divided into nine parts, with a separate main character for each part.
No protagonist in the series is like the other, and each of them has a dedicated following given their distinct personalities, abilities, and roles. Here is every JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure main character in chronological order.
Every JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Main Character
1) Jonathan Joestar - Phantom Blood

As the original JoJo, Jonathan Joestar is the progenitor of his bloodline’s never-ending fight against evil. Raised in historical England, Jonathan depicts the perfect gentleman with no faults in his actions.
Though initially a naive and spoiled young boy, he matures soon after the deceptive Dio is adopted into his family. Jonathan’s unwavering and heroic spirit wins over several allies as well as viewers. To combat the supernatural threats in his world, Jonathan also learns to use Hamon.
2) Joseph Joestar - Battle Tendency

Compared to Jonathan’s “Mary Sue” trope, his grandson Joseph is a lot more dynamic. He is a young and witty trickster who is devoted to his family and lives life on his terms. However, Joseph’s easygoing nature is soon put to a halt with the introduction of the dangerous Pillar Men.
To defeat them, he hones his Hamon ability with a flair of unpredictability. Joseph Joestar is the protagonist of Battle Tendency but also returns in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 3: Stardust Crusaders. He goes on to acquire the Stand Hermit Purple, which casts out vines and allows him to gather divine information.
3) Jotaro Kujo - Stardust Crusaders

Jotaro Kujo, considered by many to be the coolest main character in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, is initially a delinquent who is rude to his family members. However, fans soon find that it is part of his charm and comes from a place of compassion.
Jotaro is a fearless individual who loves his mother and sets off on a journey to kill the revived Dio and save her. Over the course of the series, he masters his Stand, Star Platinum, which can stop time itself.
4) Josuke Higashikata - Diamond Is Unbreakable

Josuke, Joseph’s illegitimate son, is the most normal JoJo. At first glance, he is a temperamental person who is quick to pick fights, especially if someone makes fun of his hair. However, apart from his quirks, Josuke is a very caring and protective individual. He does not put up a facade and openly showcases his emotions.
At the same time, Josuke is also actively aware of the stakes and the necessity to defeat the main villain of the series, Yoshikage Kira. Josuke’s Stand, Crazy Diamond, allows him to heal and repair both objects and people.
5) Giorno Giovanna - Golden Wind

Giorno Giovanna, who many believe to be the strongest JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure main character, is also the only one who is not a direct JoJo. Rather, he was born when Dio was using Jonathan’s body. Giorno is a serious and dedicated man with unbreakable resolve. He has high aspirations and aims to reform the chaotic mafia.
Throughout his adventures, he forms valuable relationships and faces the dangerous Diavolo. Pushed due to his dangerous circumstances, Giorno evolves his Golden Experience Stand to Golden Experience Requiem and can manipulate life and death itself.
6) Jolyne Cujoh - Stone Ocean

The only female JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure main character, Jolyne Cujoh, is the daughter of Jotaro. Sent to prison after being framed, Jolyne exhibits her nature as a headstrong person with a strong sense of right and wrong. She can be excessively confrontational against enemies, but is very loyal to her allies.
To prevent Enrico Pucci from achieving his plans, Jolyne also shows ingenuity in wielding her Stand, Stone Free, which turns her body into a string.
7) Johnny Joestar - Steel Ball Run

As the first JoJo in the new timeline, Johnny Joestar is introduced as a paraplegic man who is depressed and has low self-confidence. While living life with little meaning, he is soon filled with purpose upon witnessing Gyro Zeppeli’s mysterious steel balls. As he follows him on a cross-continent race, Johnny gradually finds his resolve.
To prevent Funny Valentine from achieving his objectives with the Corpse Parts, Johnny masters his Stand, Tusk, which spins and fires powerful nails. Throughout the series, Johnny keeps upgrading this ability till he develops Tusk Act 4, which can transcend dimensions.
8) Josuke Higashikata - JoJolion

Not to be confused with the protagonist of Diamond is Unbreakable, this JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure protagonist is an amnesiac who has no memories of himself or his origins. After being adopted by the Higashikata family, Josuke relentlessly pursues clues regarding his identity.
Despite having no memories, Josuke is a man who treasures his close bonds, especially with his adoptive family. He is not unnecessarily murderous but can be violent to those who pose a danger to his loved ones. To defeat the antagonistic Rock Humans, Josuke also cleverly utilizes his Stand, Soft & Wet, which can steal the properties of targets through bubbles.
9) Jodio Joestar - The JoJoLands

The newest JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure protagonist, Jodio Joestar, is also its most morally questionable one. Raised in Hawaii, Jodio has antisocial personality disorder and is an extremely vicious individual.
He is quick to turn to violence and is solely motivated by the desire to get rich. Jodio’s Stand, November Rain, allows him to summon rain that can crush enemies through its heaviness.
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure has 9 main characters in total, each from one of the series' 9 parts. Since the anime adapts the first two parts within one season, fans may be confused in differentiating them. However, the manga separates each part by its title, making them easier to recognize.
