Hunter x Hunter: Who Is Gon?

Hunter x Hunter is a beloved anime and manga that has influenced multiple generations of shonen stories. The series revolves around hunters who explore their expansive world, pursuing their passions and documenting its endless mysteries, varied artifacts, and dangerous creatures.

One of the most fascinating aspects of the series is its diverse cast of characters, each of whom holds a distinctive place in the narrative. Even among them, Gon Freecss, the protagonist of Hunter x Hunter, is a unique individual who captivates viewers through his personality, powers, and development.

Introduced as a young boy living with his Aunt Mito on Whale Island, Gon is an energetic and excitable person who desires to become a hunter. His ambition stems from the need to chase after his father, Ging, who abandoned his family for the profession. Rather than despising his father, however, Gon shows curiosity about the world of hunters.

For its sake, he fearlessly sets off, taking part in the deadly Hunter Exams and forming valuable alliances. The most notable of these is Gon’s friendship with Killua, Kurapika, and Leorio. The group forms a lifelong partnership, assisting each other in every story arc.

Right from the outset, Gon’s personality in Hunter x Hunter is characterized by his infectious optimism and unyielding determination. He sticks true to his goals and gives his friends the highest priority. His relationship with Killua, in particular, is central to the story, portraying a rich dynamic grounded in loyalty and mutual growth.

While Gon is a young teenager throughout the series, his strength indicates otherwise. He always displayed physical superiority, but upon being introduced to Nen in the Heavens Arena Arc, his skills are elevated beyond measure. Gon is primarily an Enhancer, where he can use Aura to strengthen objects or his own body. This is the basis of his Jajanken ability, delivering destructive punches called “Rock” that can defeat the strongest of opponents.

He later develops the ability to include Transmutation and Emission, using Scissors and Paper for mid-range and short-range attacks. Gon’s most impressive and dangerous skill, however, is Limitation Transformation. With this, he can form a vow to obtain all the power he would ever have for a short burst of strength. This turns him into one of the most intimidating figures in Hunter x Hunter but leaves him at the edge of death as a consequence of using it.

The condition for Gon’s Limitation Transformation is his mental distress. Though he is a ray of sunshine for most of the series, he possesses a darkness inside him. During the Chimera Ant Arc, he was pushed past his limits due to Kite’s death and Pitou’s deceitful claim that she could heal him, ultimately leading him to give up all hope. This resulted in Gon's shocking transformation into his adult form, where he gives up his youthful innocence for the sake of vengeance.

After brutally killing Pitou, Gon’s condition was looking dire. Thankfully, due to Killua and Nanika’s powers, he was cured. By the end of the Hunter x Hunter anime, he parted ways with Killua and had the conversation with Ging he always desired. Following this, having lost his Nen, he moves back to Whale Island and lives a normal life.

Why Gon Is Unique in Hunter x Hunter

Gon is a deceptively simple character who is excessively naive. This is not inconsistent, as he is a kid, and the mangaka Togashi stresses his lack of wisdom on several occasions. While shonen anime has several main characters who are meant to be young, very few are depicted in as honest a way as Gon.

This Hunter x Hunter protagonist has never had a mentor or father figure throughout his life, giving him a black-and-white view of the world. He often contradicts himself, best exhibited through his hatred of the Phantom Troupe for killing people. However, Gon himself has worked with murderous characters such as Killua and Hisoka in the series. He also saw several examinees fall to their deaths during the Spider Eagle test of the Hunter Exam but made no effort to save them.

Due to this, Hunter x Hunter makes it apparent that Gon is unable to comprehend moral grey areas. He is simply a young boy who will always prioritize his allies over everyone else. Gifted with powers surpassing his age, this also makes him a dangerous individual. As seen in the Chimera Ant Arc, Gon saw Pitou and the Chimera Ants as nothing but monsters who had harmed the people he loved.

However, upon witnessing Pitou’s efforts to protect Komugi, his belief that she was pure evil came crumbling down. This eventually caused his mental breakdown and pushed his drastic choice of using Limitation Transformation. Even after being saved by Killua, he continues living by the same ideals since there is no one to teach him any better. Rather than being a negative aspect of his character, it highlights the creator’s adeptness at character development.

Instead of showcasing unnatural maturity from a child who never had a proper mentor to shape his mindset, Gon remains an innocent boy driven solely by his desires, attempting to impose his view of good and bad even in places where they cannot be easily defined.

Gon Freecss is a deeply complex individual who goes through a turbulent life in Hunter x Hunter. Though initially enjoying the time he spends with his friends, the darker areas of his world soon leave an impact on him. While he does not currently have Nen, Togashi has displayed how nothing is permanent in his story. Hence, fans will be looking forward to the protagonist’s potential return.
