Yoshihiro Togashi’s Hunter x Hunter is a beloved series with a manga source material and two anime adaptations. The series follows the energetic Gon Freecss’ journey as a hunter, revolving around the friends he makes, the challenges he faces, and his internal moral conflicts.

Known for its expansive world, genre-defining themes, and complex characters, each arc of the series takes us to a different part of its diverse setting. Through noticeably varied subplots, antagonists, and tones, the story arcs have developed separate fan followings.

The Hunter x Hunter manga has been ongoing since 1998 and has 7 story arcs in total. While the series has suffered constant hiatuses due to the author’s ill health, it remains one of the most critically acclaimed shonen productions of all time. The Hunter Exam Arc is the introductory arc of Hunter x Hunter. It displays the rich world with fantastical wonders explored by talented hunters. The young protagonist, Gon, sets out from Whale Island aiming to become a hunter and follow in his father’s footsteps. He faces various challenges in the infamous Hunter Exams and strikes up a friendship with Killua, Kurapika, and Leorio.

To improve their skills and earn money, Gon and Killua travel to the Heavens Arena, a grand location where one climbs floors by winning fights. As the difficulty of each floor increases, the duo discovers the mysterious Nen, an energy that allows the performance of superhuman feats. With a rematch between Gon and Hisoka in the books, the protagonist trains hard to level up and defeat the antagonist.

Set in the busy Yorknew City, this Hunter x Hunter arc revolves around Gon, Killua, and Leorio trying to make enough money to buy Greed Island, a mysterious game connected to Gon’s father. Concurrently, Kurapika works as a bodyguard on his own to find the scarlet eyes of his clan and avenge their death. With the introduction of the formidable Phantom Troupe, insight into underworld dealings, and the world’s largest auction taking place at the same location, every party gets embroiled in chaos and danger.


4) Greed Island Arc

Gon and Killua enter the video game world of Greed Island, a setting built using Nen. As they uncover the history of Gon’s father, they get trained by the memorable Biscuit and face the threat of a group known as the Bomber. This arc mainly serves as a breather between two extremely intense storylines as Gon gains more clues about Ging.

Considered by many to be one of the finest arcs in shonen history, the Chimera Ant Arc introduces the Chimera Ants, monstrous creatures whose powers surpass most hunters. As Netero’s Hunter Association aims to attack this race and take down the Ant King, Gon faces struggles of his own due to the loss of his mentor, Kite. This arc stands out due to its deep analysis of morality and humanity, and its good balance between drama and excitement.


6) 13th Hunter Chairman Election Arc

The entire cast deals with the aftermath of the Chimera Ant Arc, with the Hunter Association seeking to replace Chairman Netero, and Killua desperately searching for a cure for Gon’s injuries. This arc, filled with political intrigue, is the first time we meet the powerful Zodiacs and characters such as Ging Freecss and Pariston Hill. It introduces the all-powerful Nanika and sets up the exploration of the Dark Continent.


7) Succession Contest Arc

Manga Chapters: 340- Ongoing

Through Beyond Netero’s scheming, the ruling nations and the Zodiacs are coerced into supporting the Kakin Empire’s goal of traversing the treacherous Dark Continent. At the same time, Kurapika continues his quest of hunting the scarlet eyes, tracking them to Prince Tserriendrich. However, even before reaching the Dark Continent, the excitement begins as the Kakin Empire initiates its succession war aboard the massive Black Whale ship.


The Hunter x Hunter manga is ongoing and has two anime adaptations - one in 1999 and a remake in 2011. The first anime adapted up to the Greed Island Arc, while the recent adaptation covered every arc till the 13th Hunter Chairman Election Arc. Unfortunately, the manga still suffers from an inconsistent release schedule, but it is deep into the Succession Contest Arc with over 70 chapters.
