Demon Slayer is a universe brimming with notable fighters, cruel demons, and massive battles. But behind all the action is a calm, secretive figure quietly guiding the battle from the shadows. And that is Kagaya Ubuyashiki. He is the master of the Ubuyashiki household and the Commander of the Demon Slayer Corps. He is respected by all Hashira and members of the organisation.
Kagaya has a quiet but significant role in Demon Slayer. Although he doesn’t fight battles himself, his command steers everything the Corps does. He is a kind person who speaks in a tone as soft as his personality, but each word he says means a great deal. At 23, he has earned the trust and respect of the Corps’ fiercest fighters. Sanemi Shinazugawa is one of the most audacious fighters, listens carefully, and shows respect when Kagaya speaks.
Kagaya was born into the Ubuyashiki family. A family that was cursed due to their ties to the first demon, Muzan Kibutsuji. The disease is inherited and has been passed down through many generations. This curse slowly kills each family member over time by weakening their body and shortening their lifespan (less than 30 years). It manifests physically by making the skin look like it is decaying. When viewers meet Kagaya in the anime, the curse has already made him extremely sick and fragile. Still, he remains dedicated to the Corps and leads them with a caring hand.

Despite being physically weak, Kagaya’s strength lies in his mind and spirit. He is not respected for being strong in battle. People look up to him because he is calm, fair, and believes in the Demon Slayers. Kagaya shows strong emotional intelligence. He knows people and talks to them with compassion. He never raises his voice or gets angry, not even with tragedy. Yet, he remained exceedingly calm when a demon, Nezuko, was presented to him, and he approached the situation rationally.
One of Kagaya’s greatest strengths is that he inspires others. His fellow Corpsmen, especially the Hashira, the strongest members of the Corps, look up to him with great loyalty. Maybe because no one has more reason to hate Muzan than him, but Kagaya is respected by the demon slayers. His ability to earn the trust of such powerful warriors shows how strong his leadership truly is. Kagaya also shows great wisdom in how he plans for the future. He trusts Tanjiro Kamado and sees the boy’s potential early on, demonstrating his ability to spot strength beyond the surface.
While he is not a fighter, Kagaya is still strong. He can sense the presence of the people around him and accurately discern their strength. When Muzan pulled up to his mansion, he was able to hide his hate and murderous intent, which made Muzan fall into the demon slayers' trap. It wasn't until after the explosion that Muzan realised Kagaya had such emotions towards him. Kagaya (and other members of the Ubayashiki family) have the ability of foresight. Some of his predictions were about Muzan’s weakness and the aftermath of Gyutaro and Daki’s deaths.

Kagaya is also a symbol of the Corps' dedication to humanity. Even knowing that the curse will soon take his life, he never stops working toward the end goal: the defeat of Muzan. He believes in the importance of sacrifice but never demands it from others without offering his own. When the time came, in the Infinity Castle arc, Kagaya willingly gave up his life to protect the people he led and to strike a blow against Muzan. His final act is one of bravery and strategy. He uses his own death to trap and weaken the demon king, giving the Demon Slayer Corps a much-needed chance.
Kagaya’s Legacy in Demon Slayer
Although Kagaya has very little presence in the anime, he plays a significant role in the story. He mentored the next generation of Demon Slayers like Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke. He dies, but his memory still gives others the strength to keep fighting. His legacy lives on, with his family, particularly his children, still actively involved in supporting the Corps. Kiriya, his son, became the 98th leader of the Ubayashiki family and was the last leader of the Demon Slayer Corps in the manga.
Kagaya Ubuyashiki’s story reinforces a prevailing theme in Demon Slayer: true strength doesn’t necessarily come from swords or breathing styles. Strength can also just be going through rough times without panicking, trusting others, and aiming to be kind. He instills in the characters and the audience that courage and wisdom can be as powerful as swords and techniques.

Conclusion
Kagaya Ubuyashiki may not be the strongest fighter in Demon Slayer, but he does play a meaningful role. He guides the Corps and leads them with hope and purpose. He’s always calm, kind, and wise, which makes others feel safe in his presence. Even after he dies, his words and actions guide the group. In a world with powerful fighters and cruel demons, Kagaya proved that true power could be found in gentleness.
