As one of the most popular shonen anime series of the new generation, Demon Slayers revolves around the tensions between the dangerous demons and the Demon Slayers who fight them. The story excels at character dynamics, showcasing the heartfelt relationships that shape the motivations and personalities of individuals.

These aren’t restricted to just the heroes; they are also seen in the case of Muzan and his forces. For instance, the intimidating demon Akaza had a love interest called Koyuki in Demon Slayer when he was a human. The time he spent with her and their tragic tale drove all his actions in the series.

To understand Akaza’s complexity, it is essential to learn about his past. During his introduction, Akaza was merely the detestable Upper-Rank Three Demon who faithfully served Muzan and killed Rengoku. However, when facing Tanjiro and Giyu in the Infinity Castle Arc, fans get to experience the heart-wrenching life of Akaza and the circumstances that led him to become a demon.

As a human, Akaza’s original name was Hakuji. He was crushed by poverty and committed petty thefts for the sake of buying medicine for his sick father. Unfortunately, he was soon caught by the Magistrate and punished. Upon learning of his son's crimes, Azaka's father killed himself, believing it was the only way not to not be a burden.

Left with no purpose, Hakuji went rogue and fought with anyone he saw. During one of these outings, he met his master, Keizo. The boy faced instant defeat at the hands of the easygoing man but was surprisingly invited to his dojo. While there, Hakuji met Keizo’s daughter, Koyuki. The young girl had lost her mother and was bedridden due to her illness.

Keizo assigned Hakuji to look after her and made the boy his apprentice, teaching him his Soryu style martial arts. Hakuji, having taken care of his father for most of his life, saw no trouble fulfilling his duties. His treatment towards Koyuki, where he naturally assumed she would live far into the future, touched the isolated girl’s heart.

As a result, Hakuji and Koyuki fell in love, each captivated by the other's unique kindness. When Koyuki was nearly well again, Keizo named Hakuji the successor of his dojo and offered him his daughter's hand in marriage. Though the pair were equally shy, they were deeply in love with each other. Hakuji resolved to protect Koyuki for the rest of their lives.

Regrettably, he couldn’t keep his promise he held. Due to the schemes of a rival dojo, both Keizo and Koyuki were poisoned to death when Hakuji went to visit his father’s grave. Enraged, the boy brutally killed the perpetrators, to the degree that he caught Muzan’s attention. The Demon King then turned the boy into a demon, and he eventually became the infamous Akaza.

Koyuki’s Influence on Akaza in Demon Slayer

Koyuki may have only been seen through Akaza’s flashback sequence, but her influence was everlasting. Akaza did not fully remember his life as a human, but an invisible hand guided his actions. He refused to kill women even though it would have made him much stronger. His technique, Compass Needle, had also been inspired by Koyuki’s hairpin.

Additionally, the names of his techniques drew inspiration from fireworks—a reference to Akaza’s promise to see fireworks with Koyuki during their first meeting, which was the conversation that started their relationship.

Poetically, Akaza’s life and death in Demon Slayer were also impacted by Koyuki. After having his head cut off by Tanjiro, the demon was rapidly regenerating due to his innate desires driven by rage and the need to fight. At this point, visions of Koyuki, his father, and his master came to Akaza. They spoke to him and told him of how he had done enough and could move on.

This caused Akaza to break down, making him recall his identity as Hakuji. He emotionally hugged Koyuki and eventually died. In the afterlife, Hakuji was seen reuniting with Koyuki and Keizo, bringing a sweet ending to the couple.

In Demon Slayer, Akaza—once a human named Hakuji—had a love interest named Koyuki. Her death shaped his motivations, but her memory also helped him give up being a demon during the Infinity Castle Arc. Hence, while their relationship was only featured for a few chapters, it left an indelible mark on fans.
