Chainsaw Man is set in a world threatened by devils feeding upon humanity’s fears. The series follows several of these entities, both strong and weak. Among the most fearsome and powerful devils on this list, the Death Devil stands on top.
Given how the devil's powers correlate to humans’ negative feelings, no concept is as terrifying as death. Therefore, the Death Devil is intimidating enough to frighten both humanity and her own race. She is part of the Four Horsemen along with the Control Devil, the War Devil, and the Famine Devil.
While all four of these beings consider each other sisters, none hold fond feelings toward the Death Devil. Makima had aimed to use Chainsaw Man’s powers to kill her sister in the Public Safety Saga, while Yoru and Fami expressed their hatred in the Academy Saga.

The main reason for their feelings is due to the Prophecy of Nostradamus. According to this foretelling, the Death Devil will descend into the world in July 1999 and bring about a dark age that will lead to the extinction of both humans and devils. To combat this devil, the War Devil wished to turn Chainsaw Man into her weapon while “Fami” used the Chainsaw Man Church to raise the powers of both Pochita and Yoru.
However, chapter 198 of the Chainsaw Man manga revealed the most shocking plot twist of the series. This completely changed the stakes while creating a plethora of questions among readers.
(Please note that “Fami” will be used when referring to the Death Devil’s fake identity here on.)
The Death Devil was originally believed to have been revealed in chapter 195 of the Chainsaw Man manga. This chapter saw the introduction of an anxious new girl who joined a high school and informed her classmates how she was about to save them.
She was naive but clearly thought of herself as superior to others. Additionally, clues such as the concentric circles in her eyes and her dialogue about helping others through death led fans to assume she was the Death Devil. Soon after, the alleged Death Devil faced Fakesaw Man and even consumed the lifespans of her classmate and nearby ants to revive herself.
Fakesaw Man also attacked her since he deduced she was the Death Devil, only to discover otherwise. After being brutally beaten down, Fakesaw Man’s victim revealed how she was the Famine Devil and not the Death Devil. Her powers involved making others starve and eating their lifespans.

This was a surprise to all fans as they had already been acquainted with the Famine Devil earlier in the saga. As if to answer all questions, the fake Famine Devil entered the scene and revealed herself to be the Death Devil. She told her tearful sister how she had used the name “Fami” to trick those around her and hide in plain sight.
Foreshadowing of the Death Devil’s Reveal in Chainsaw Man
Fans are yet to fully recover from the twist that “Fami” was, in fact, the Death Devil. However, there were always hints regarding this. The villain of the Public Safety Saga was the calm and collected Makima, who never lost her composure.
Given Makima’s hatred of the Death Devil, it was unlikely that the newly introduced and shy Famine Devil would be the Death Devil. Rather, “Fami,” who was present from the beginning of part 2, shared many character traits with Makima. Her appearances were random, and readers could never tell where her allegiance lay.

Apart from this, Yoshida first spoke about the Death Devil to “Fami,” seeming suspicious of her. Yoru had also attempted to tell Asa not to trust “Fami,” though she got abruptly cut off. “Fami” had helped create the Chainsaw Man Church to protect humanity, but her motivations and personality were always ambiguous.
She cared little about killing humans and could even summon the Guillotine Devil, a power that was inconsistent if she really was the Famine Devil. Hence, the reveal of “Fami” being the Death Devil made complete sense.
In her limited appearance, the Death Devil has shown that she controls the Fire Devil, the Falling Devil, and the Guillotine Devil. She also appears to be suicidal, having disposed of all her body’s organs but failing to die. Hence, while the Death Devil is prophesied to destroy the world, she may wish for Chainsaw Man or Yoru to kill her.
Based on what little has been showcased, the Death Devil has been much more manipulative than Makima. She brought the entire cast to trust her and shifted the blame of being the Death Devil to the real Famine Devil. As more chapters are released, fans will get a better idea of her schemes and the chaos she inflicts.
