The Naruto sequel, Boruto, has no shortage of fascinating new characters that help set it apart from its predecessor. Among these, the Human God Trees introduced in Two Blue Vortex are especially intriguing due to their overpowering abilities and unique personalities.
Matsuri is one of the Human God Trees in Boruto, created due to Code’s Claw Grimes consuming Moegi Kazamatsuri. While there are several ambiguous Shinju in the series, Matsuri has been featured the most, giving fans a close look into her ambitions and mindset. As a result, they can’t help but be captivated by her character.
To understand more about Matsuri, it is critical to know how she was created. Except for Jura, all the Human God Trees are created when the Claw Grimes—made by Code splitting up the Ten-Tails—consume targets. When the victim falls prey, their body gets turned into a small tree. At the same time, a self-aware God Tree is created, carrying the original body’s chakra source.

During Code’s attack on Konoha, Moegi Kazamatsuri, a talented Jonin and friend of Konohamaru, was consumed by the Claw Grimes. Consequently, the Human God Tree Matsuri was created.
Since Matsuri was made by taking Moegi as a sample, their appearances are very similar. She is an intense antagonist who holds a senior position within the ranks of the Shinju. Matsuri’s desires are also shaped by Moegi’s feelings. While this Human God Tree adamantly considers herself to be a distinctive individual, her actions in Boruto are ultimately driven by her connection with Moegi.
Much like Moegi, Matsuri is talented in Earth Release and Water Release. However, her powers are much more potent. As a Human God Tree, she can naturally use Wood Release and possesses the Rinnegan. While she hasn’t engaged in many direct battles, she is powerful enough to restrain Gaara. Her condescending attitude towards Code also suggests that she is much stronger than him.

Matsuri’s main contribution comes from her sensory abilities. She can use trees and flora to detect her surroundings and track people. Even in a desert, she could use the trees under the ground to sense Boruto’s movements.
Matsuri’s Relationship With Konohamaru in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex
As seen earlier, Matsuri’s ambitions and personality in the series are linked to Moegi's, albeit in a much more extreme form. As a testament to this, the Human God Tree intensely loves Konohamaru. Moegi and Konohamaru grew up together in Konoha and were part of Team Ebisu together.
While they were close friends, the series never directly implied any romantic feelings. However, once Matsuri was created, the truth was revealed. Whenever the antagonist would think or talk about Konohamaru, she would deeply blush.
Her feelings towards Konohamaru were the center of Konoha’s plans to infiltrate the Human God Trees and attack them when their guard was down. Shikamaru instructed Konohamaru to ally with their dangerous enemies under the guise of searching for Boruto.
Things soon went sour due to Konohamaru’s own complicated feelings. After Matsuri accepted working with the ninjas, she got the opportunity to speak alone with Konohamaru. While she was unaware of what “love” meant, she knew she felt intense attraction to him. However, when Matsuri asked Konohamaru if she could call him “Konohamaru-chan,” she was turned down.
This was because Moegi was the only one who called Konohamaru by that nickname. Hence, in that inopportune moment, Konohamaru came to terms with the fact that he saw Moegi as more than just a friend. Matsuri, realizing that Konohamaru was hung up on Moegi, experienced heartbreak for the first time. She decided to not navigate her emotions anymore and began consuming Konohamaru through her Wood Release.

When attacking him, however, she began crying. Konohamaru noticed this and desperately told Matsuri that it meant she didn’t wish to kill him. Taking advantage of a moment of vulnerability, Konohamaru attacked her with the Rasengan. Unfortunately, he failed to defeat her, only infuriating Matsuri more.
Matsuri’s key role in Boruto is her relationship with Konohamaru. Her feelings for him helped fans realize that Moegi also liked Konohamaru. During the conversation with the God Tree, Konohamaru showed signs of sharing Moegi’s feelings. Regretfully, this came at the wrong time, causing Matsuri to go into a rage due to her inability to understand her emotions.
Given that the battle against the Human God Trees ended in an exciting cliffhanger in the latest Two Blue Vortex chapter, fans are eagerly awaiting the next installment.
